Today was the hottest day in our forecast reaching triple digits as the Pacific Northwest is currently trapped in a Heat Dome. As the temperature began to rise, caregivers were quick to offer the chimpanzees some solace in the this scorching weather. There were tons of icy treats, cool refreshing drinks, fans, and misters for the chimpanzees to enjoy.
Burrito, Jamie, and Jody enjoy a pool filled with Gatorade and ice inside their playroom.
Willy B also enjoyed ice in a Rock Around toy.
Mave (I personally think) had the best idea. Find the best place to lay down next to a sandbox (minus the sand) filled with Gaotrade and ice, take a few drinks, and lay the ice cubes on the floor next to you and enjoy at your leisure.
As we are still trying to get to know the new group of chimpanzees, we were curious what their decisions would be. For the most part, most of them have been spending a lot of time in their greenhouses usually grooming or napping.
Rayne and Gordo taking it easy in the shade.
Dora sitting in the shady spot right underneath the greenhouse platform.
Gordo on the same log amongst the bamboo with the stem from his breakfast bananas.
As the day began to come to an end, I was able to gather these last minute photos of how some of the chimpanzees were dealing with the last minute heat.
Negra ate her portion of dinner bell peppers inside.
Willy B, Honey B, and Mave spent the rest of the afternoon in a grooming party inside.
And Dora enjoying her evening food puzzle, a Kong, inside one of her playrooms.
As a bonus, a photo from yesterday I was able to get of Terry with fistfuls of beets and carrots.
And as one final bonus, a photo of Lucky (left) and Dora (right) exploring their greenhouse on the day they arrived here.

Hi Chad!
I’ve asked before about the rockers, as Willy B has here. I was wondering if you had some or if the chimps liked them, since I’ve never seen one before this (and have always thought Foxie would like spinning on one).
Are there others? What size are they?

I feel for y’all under the heat dome. I’m from Oklahoma, so I know how miserable triple digit heat is. Hopefully y’all will get a break soon.
Dora is so petite and so pretty! And Terry is so handsome! And that’s a fantastic pic of the Queen. She and I share the ability of dropping crumbs down our bellies, lol!

Hi, Kim. I grew up in Stillwater, OK, but I think these temperatures have the Oklahoma stuff beat! It’s awful.

Love the pic of Willy B, Honey B and Mave…great capture! Thank you for all the wonderful photos, looks like everyone is doing well and settling in just fine with all the cool loving care they’re getting at their new home. 🙂

I have been closely following your weather and while your temps will be in the low 90’s, looks as if your hot spell will linger until next week. (Thank goodness there’s no such thing as climate change or we’d really have to worry. wink, wink!) Of all the times for the hottest record breaking temperatures to hit WA. My heart goes out to you. But as always, neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these caregivers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. Pools of Gatorade and ice! Incredible. Thanks for all the great photos of these beautiful faces (and bellies in Negra’s case0.
Have a peaceful night and follow Mave’s lead!

Thank you Chad!

Hey Chad, thank you for the lovely photo’s, and I agree: it seems everyone is doing well.
But I was wondering how the Humans are doing, walking around in those hot wellies???
The chimps can just hang around, eat, drink and do nothing ( Oh Negra the Buddha, and Mave doing her favorite activity..), but you people have to clean and laundre and who knows what others tasks you have…..
Sending you lots of cooling thoughts and apreciation.

We’re used to those temperatures in Australia, but I feel for you all……stay safe and cool y’all. Thank you as always for such wonderful photos.

Ohhhhh, what a wonderful gift it is for the newbies to have such amazing caregivers and (hopefully) friends to add to their family group (we’ll see how that goes!). That they seem to be settling in so well so quickly is a testament to how well they’ve been treated at Wildlife Waystation (that they’re not hiding out or huddled together in a frightened, neurotic mass). Of course, it’s also a testament to the environment they’ve joined with loving caregivers and such spectacular space to call their own, despite the short-term heat. Thanks to all for the contributions to bring them to WA so they can have a new life of sanctuary. It’s taken a village, that’s for sure!

Wonderful sentiment Marya. <3
Yes it has taken a village. I’m so honored to be a resident in this village. What a great group of people. Thank you to everyone from Waystation Who loved them for decades and gave us such a beautiful healthy family of six. And to Project Chimps for providing the transport and drivers. And of course to our own dear family of caregivers and providers and lovers and sponsors of CSNW. There are an awful lot of great big hearts in this endeavor.
