It’s the Great Tomato Hunt, Missy!

May 4, 2021 by Chad de Bree

To watch Missy during a forage with tomatoes involved is like watching a pinball in a pinball machine. At first it seems like random zooming all over the place. But after a while, you realize that it’s all controlled and Missy indeed has a plan. The best way to describe it is “organized chaos.”

Last August, caregiver Anthony was able to perfectly describe Missy’s tomato obsession.

As soon as she spies us take those waxy red orbs out of the refrigerator, Missy turns into a ravenous lunatic whose sole objective is to ingest as many tomatoes as quickly as possible.”

When Missy first makes her way outside, first thing is to grab whatever tomato that is immediate vicinity.

Once all those are gone, it’s time to make her way to the structures. This serves as two benefits:

1) There are usually some hidden at the base of the structure.

2) Structures also provide a good vantage point to spot more tomatoes.

(Plus there may be a hidden one on the top of the structure.)

At times, when she is at a high view point, it almost seems that she plans out her route to capitalize on her movements.

While during the initial start of the forage, Missy eats as she goes. When she passes this stage, she begins collecting her prized foods. This is where her planning from the top comes in. Racing from one spot to the next, grabbing all that she can hold onto with her hands, feet, and mouth.

Once she cannot carry anymore, she anchors in a spot and enjoys the bounty of her tomato hunt.

It’s days like today, watching Missy zoom from place to place in the hunt for tomatoes, we feel very fortunate to be able to provide things they love. You can help us by donating to this year’s Give Big Washington campaign, which ends tomorrow. Anything helps us reach our goal and it directly helps them. So please consider donating if you can.

The abundance of spring

May 3, 2021 by Katelyn

It was day filled with the abundant kind of beauty, joy and excitement that only spring can bring. The chimpanzees enjoyed a special treat of their first taste of lilacs for the season and everyone loved them!

Negra was moving so fast, and had so many, I was barely able to capture any photos of her:

Lilacs are a brief, but glorious treat this time of year. They are also a Mother’s Day tradition here at the sanctuary. We always have a special celebration to honor all of the chimpanzee and bovine mamas and their children, and it’s also the day we celebrate Jody’s honorary birthday. So this was a warm up to the amazing day we have planned for Mother’s Day and Jody’s birthday this Sunday!

Jody:

Burrito was enjoying a nice handful until…

…his good friend, Foxie, came by to ask if he might be willing to share (since she had finished hers). Burrito was a gentleman and left them to Foxie and went off to find what was left over:

Jamie seemed to be thoroughly relishing her flowers:

Negra:

After enjoying their lilac appetizer, the seven had a lunch forage on the hill.

Missy was a tough lady to capture in photos today, but she seemed to enjoy everything the day had to offer.

As we’ve mentioned in the past, Mave, Honey B, and Willy B are at least initially pretty skeptical of much that we offer them food wise. Honey B offers her classic dead pan stare and purses her lips tightly together while looking at us as if to ask us just what it is we think we’re trying to pull by serving such a crazy thing. I will gently poke her lips as I food grunt, but she won’t budge! But today I did get her to try ONE tiny flower and I was so excited when she asked for the rest! But she promptly found a better use for them and began nesting with them instead! The joy of abundant choice:

The three were busy today playing chase with each other and the humans all through their new home and spent a lot of time napping in the warm spring sun and cool breeze from the comfort of their outdoor chute. Willy B enjoyed a nut forage in the courtyard, watched Orangutan Island, and took a nice nap in the sun while being groomed by Mave.

And last but not least, our little cattle family, Betsy, Nutmeg, Honey and Meredith were moved over to their spring pasture today! Jamie supervised, naturally:

It’s so nice to look out from the chimp house and see them out there again! There was some great video and photos of the spring event captured which will most likely be showing up on the blog later in the week!

Happy spring all!

The Time Lapse Experiment

May 2, 2021 by Anthony

I recently started playing around with a function on my new camera: time lapse photography.

To create a time lapse piece, I set the camera on a tripod and program it to automatically take an exposure every five seconds for an extended time (up to an hour in most cases). The camera’s processor then compiles the image files into a video that I can edit and share as a movie.

Lately, I’ve been experimenting with the various settings in different lighting conditions and locations, trying to get angles that capture daily activity around the sanctuary. Like landscape photography and astrophotography, time lapses require trial, error, and patience.

In my limited experience, the simplest approach is to fine-tune the settings and then let the camera’s lens, sensor and processor do their respective jobs without interruption. With luck, the camera delivers a final product that is comparable to (or better than) the piece I imagined in my head. If not, I can scrap the idea entirely or make adjustments and try again.

I hope you all enjoy the results of these preliminary experiments!

Up-Close – Really Up-Close – Chewing

May 1, 2021 by Diana

Who is your favorite chewer from the video? And why is it that non-humans animals chewing is charming, but hearing the same from our own species drives some of us up the wall?
