Intruder Alert

April 19, 2021 by Katelyn

If you saw Chad’s blog post yesterday, you will know the chimpanzees enjoyed a delightful Sunday with a variety of Sunday kind of activities. Despite all the relaxing, napping, and lounging going on, there were a few moments of excitement mid-afternoon! An “intruder” passed through one of the chimpanzees’ garden spaces outside the raceway that leads to Young’s Hill, the chimps’ 2-acre outdoor habitat, and Annie sounded the alarm!

Viewer Advisory No 1: If you’ve followed us for awhile and know Annie’s hatred for these particular neighbors, you may well have a good idea of who it was. And if you’re new to the blog and/or have a strong aversion to seeing snakes, well, here’s your fair warning to maybe skip this one. 🙂 ).

Viewer Advisory No. 2: No rattlesnakes were involved! And no chimpanzees, snakes, or caregivers were harmed in the making of this video, so no worries! 😉

Oh Wow what a beautiful snake. So glad it wasn’t a rattlesnake.

Oh, Geez — recalling the “adventure” that Burrito went through (and the rest of us alongside him & supporting caregivers), I’m not so thrilled about snakes near the chimps. Good for Annie and everyone who was alerted and could rescue them both from each other. Yes, gorgeous snake. I, for one, am glad to see the back of it headed elsewhere. Thanks to all humans and chimp people for their bravery.

I feel the same way, I feel bad that I called Annie a drama queen in the past, after what happened to poor Burrito, I want Annie to yell all she wants.
      you go girl !

Thank you Chad for not harming that little guy or girl garter snake. Sadly snakes and spiders and all other species that crawl or slither in the night have more reason to fear humans then humans have to fear them. Us humans are like the monsters of this planet and rein down fear like T-Rex did when ever he or she came around lurking in others domains. Actually humans are the real monsters. I don’t blame Annie though, poor girl doesn’t want a snake slinking in to sleep next to her at night. All groups need a howler in the group to look out for everyone else and Annie is doing a great job. Annie and Indiana Jones have something special in common now I see. If you don’t get that joke, watch Indiana Jones and his reaction to snakes. Maybe C.S.N.W. should buy the neighboring property and start a snake sanctuary for all the abused and mistreated snakers out there.

My thoughts exactly. There is no more dangerous animal than the human. Even so, I do wish that the word would get around in the serpent community that, as stated on this website, “The Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest is NOT open to the public.”

Oh, I loved Annie’s way of saying: “warmer. You’re getting warmer. Nah, you’re cold. Warmer…”
    They’re so amazing!

(Haven’t seen a garter snake since I was a kid. Didn’t realize their colors were so pretty)

I, too, want dear, sweet Annie to yell all she likes, until the construction is done and the snake proof fencing is hood again! It’ll be a tense summer until then.

Yikes! Chad, you’re Annie’s hero! Thank goodness it was not a rattler!! Loved everyone lined up in a row instructing Chad as to where the snake was. Annie’s directions, alarm calls and raspberries, were brilliant. I loved Jamie’s happy dance. Mr. Snake is beautiful, especially set against the backdrop of Chad’s red shirt, but eek, I admit that I feel like Annie when I see a snake.

How amazing are they? Well done Annie. Your eyesight and intelligence are both incredible…..how she saw such a small snake then conveyed it to her friends and Chad…,wow! Sorry but I’m right there with her… I hate snakes, dangerous or not and living in Australia is probably one of the worst places to be. But I hope you get that snake proof fencing up very soon, so Annie and I can sleep at nights!

Oh, gosh, yes! To those of us outside, it seems like 60% of your wildlife is trying to kill you, 70% if you count the magpies! The snakes are the worst because they get in the houses, right? (Though I’m also not a fan of bats and I’ve heard of your flying foxes and their 6-foot wingspan). Stay safe out there!

We discussed animals (our favorites) today, Katelyb, and while we were waiting for groups to come back on Zoom we watched this (and Jamie Smarty Pants’s Xmas 2015 solution)

You are right! Annie is absolutely gorgeous! Funny I don’t think I’ve ever taken the time to see that. I’m usually captured by the antics of my Valentine Burrito and Foxie and Honeybee. Great pic of Annie <3 and hilarious raspberries! LMAO
