Gloomy Yet Beautiful

December 10, 2019 by Kelsi

Today was a bit of a gloomy and frosty day.

Though when you get closer it is beautiful. Everywhere around the sanctuary was covered in hoar frost.

J.B. has been very busy building what we are calling the courtyard, which is where we extended Young’s Hill and the new structure was built. He put fencing up to help create a smaller Hill for Mave, Honey B, and Willy B, which also includes a boardwalk to the new structure since they are still getting use to their new surroundings. We are hoping this will entice the three to go out onto the Hill. Their first experience was not great. They all touched the fence many times. The Hill is also a huge open spaced compared anything they have ever experienced. Honey B, Willy B, and Mave have lived on concrete for a long time in a relatively small space. This kind of open area could take a long time to warm up too. Willy B especially, seems to not like touching the ground. This may be one of the many reasons the three have not yet adventured onto the Hill again.

Jody was on Young’s Hill and excited to see Willy B in the chute:

Willy B in the chute and the girls looking at him from the playroom windows:

Mave joined in too:

Missy (top) and Annie (bottom) watching Willy B and Mave in the chute:

Jody decided that this was fun, but she needed to nest:

Willy B let Burrito borrow his TV! Burrito enjoyed a film about Koko the gorilla and a documentary about Jane Goodall 🙂

Mave <3:

I also wanted to let you all know, we have started putting the chimps Christmas presents on the Amazon Wishlist! So if you missed out on the blankets or were wondering what the chimps would like for Christmas, check it out!

I guess the colder weather doesn’t help much, when you’re a chimp who’s not used to being in the open outdoors.
Lovely of Willy B to loan his tv to Burrito and Burrito is obviously loving it. Love the photo of him watching it. The blankets laid carefully out, a nice heater close by and a good movie or two.. just the thing for a frosty day. It’s so wonderful that he’s the recipient of such loving care… but where’s the popcorn?!

J.B.’s carpentry skills sure come in handy, the new walkway is perfect! And you’ve staged it to perfection with the blankets and (I’m assuming) yummy food items — oh so enticing! If only it was Springtime and Negra’s sweet grass was growing in the courtyard, Mave, Honey B, and Willy B would certainly gather enough courage to head outside and explore. Winter may present as big a problem as being zapped multiple times by the electric fence. But I am keeping the faith that the California Crew will venture out when they are ready….Hummm, maybe we need a big ol’ Slinky placed on that new fancy walkway. ; )

I just about squealed when I saw Burrito watching Willy B’s new TV with his custom heater on the side (placed directly in front of his blanket nest pile. Mr. B sure is recuperating in style and he so deserves it all!

Thanks for this wonderful post Kelsi!

Oh, the boardwalk, you guys spoil them so! Brilliant idea….too bad you couldn’t get Jo out into their area to welcome them- they could just follow her.

    Just Jamie’s boots!?

Ha, I just watched the Jane documentary this week! If it’s the same one, my dog was a little freaked out by the screaming chimp battles over items stolen from the camp.

Well, I was on my phone and not my laptop, so missed out on Jamie’s boots, but I’m happy she’s getting them! (I only buy things on my phone if absolutely necessary, and it was too late to fire up the laptop). The Tiny One has some more trolls that I found, with a larger sized Poppy. Should have reached you by now/or will very shortly. I see you don’t do party sponsors any longer, but hopefully, Foxie likes her troll.

I agree…… Get the popcorn and throw some sweet cream butter on it!

Is Burrito watching “Jane”, which was released a couple of years ago? I hope that he is not upset by the footage of some serpents (in central Africa, of all places). I wonder what he makes of Koko? Jody seems pleased to catch site of Willy B.

I think that’s my biggest disappointment, is Jo not getting to hang with “the big man”….she was so excited….I hope they get some play dates in the future…
