Speaking of whom, in regard to the Mar. 15 post (“The Tell”), I am left to wonder: do female apes of the age range of Jody, Annie, Jamie et al, experience menopause? At what age does the menstrual cycle normally end for chimpanzees? I am curious to know if, absent of such cycling, a male such as Burrito might have one less incentive to display?
(Not to single out Burrito, of course, who remains absolutely charming).
Hi Tobin! The research is unclear on whether or when chimps experience menopause. We do know that chimps can have babies late in life, and there’s no conclusive evidence that I’m aware of that they do go through menopause. Female chimps’ shorter lifespan compared to human women would mean that if menopause does occur, it probably occurs much closer to the end of their lives (as opposed to humans who typically live another few decades post-menopause).
