The chimps often use straws for drinking things that aren’t within reach (such as evening food puzzle drink buckets that we set outside their enclosures).
Sometimes they like to improvise and use straws, just because they can (not because it’s necessary). Annie for instance, likes to bring her own straw along to drink her morning smoothie (that we usually serve straight to her lips from the cup). Here’s Jamie making an interesting tool use choice.
I knew as soon as I saw the title of the post what this was about! 😀
Well, she makes her life interesting……..now, will someone please attend to MIss Foixe over there!? 😛
Like they say, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” That’s a nice photograph at the end of the video
of Dr. Missy conference with the Professor of Engineering; the meeting of the minds.
Like Linda, I cracked up at the title of the post the minute I saw it and I just knew who “SHE” was going to be. I wish this video had shown Jamie hooking up the straw to the spigot, how did she get it to stay in place?! You have to admire a determined gal who loves a challenge.
Life is but a game….. love and hugs to you all!
How much time do they spend in their concrete cell vs. outdoors per day?
Hi Robyn! Short answer – the chimpanzees are given the choice of where they can be at most times and most of the chimpanzees seem to prefer the greenhouse overall, though there’s some variation by individual. I just sent you an email with some more details and a link to this post: https://chimpsnw.org/2015/11/why-are-the-chimps-in-cages/
