Morning happenings

December 3, 2018 by Katelyn

I always think it’s the best feeling to spend time out in the brisk elements and then come inside and get warm. That’s exactly how the chimps chose to spend their time after breakfast today. They climbed, ran, chased, explored and meandered over every nook and cranny of the hill. I even caught someone hanging upside down from a metal bar licking ice off of it who I was certain was Foxie, but was delighted to discover was Jody! Naturally, as I raised the camera she swung off to other adventures so you’ll have to take my word for it. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย After a surprising amount of time outside the chimps all returned to the toasty chimp house to make fluffy nests, warm-up and doze off.

Jamie after taking just herself and her new pair of boots for a walk all the way around the hill:

Foxie was napping along with everyone else until I popped by with the camera…

Hello. I am Foxie. And I’m fabulous:

Session over! (This is how about 90% of our photos turn out by the way ๐Ÿ˜‰ )….

Burrito was resting as well, but for whatever reasons, his photos didn’t turn out so it’s just the ladies today.

Foxie is indeed fabulous……she looks as though sheยดs thinking deep thoughts in the first few, and then suddenly,…….PLAY FACE! ๐Ÿ™‚ That last one–is that a Foxie spin captured on film!?
Do you ever worry that the snow will be too cold for them, or that they’ll get frostbite? Hearing today’s news about Jody and the frozen pole is scary……..tell her no sticking her tongue on frozen poles! It’ll stick! ๐Ÿ˜€

      Hi Linda,

We always monitor weather conditions, but the chimpanzees are great about self-monitoring. For the most part, what’s comfortable for us is comfortable for them. They won’t typically walk in much snow longer than to collect some to eat. ๐Ÿ™‚ After heavier snowfalls we shovel pathways to their structures and line them with straw so they can get out and about a little more comfortably if they choose.

Thanks for answering, Katelyn! Straw….that’s the answer! I know that their hands, being used like feet, and vice versa, are more leathery than ours, but cold is cold, and they didn’t evolve to survive those temps. Glad to hear that you put straw down for them, so they can get at least a little fresh air throughout the long winters.

Negra looks 10 years younger in this photo (proving she really IS aging in reverse!). These photos are sensational. Each one. BUT, Fabulous Foxie steals the show. She is Fabulous and beyond, and she is beautiful even when in a blur of motion. (I see a little ouchie on her right ear, ?!) Thanks for this wonderful post, can’t think of finer way to have ended my day. XOXO

Good eye, Kathleen, as always! ๐Ÿ™‚ She does have a very superficial scratch

BOY they sure do get good use out of those soft fleecy blankets. They all look so comfy. How did they ever survive those steel medical lab cages all those years. They deserve the best now and I am so glad they get everything their little heart desire. The photos of Foxie were just wonderful. And I cracked up when she started making faces at you like a child who has just about had enough during a photo session.
