The wonderful “Pay it Forward for the Chimpanzees” streak continues today through the generosity of the chimps’ good friend, Julie Lawell, who sponsored today’s day of sanctuary in honor of Lisa Stuverud (who sent out out another wave in this ripple effect of giving yesterday, in honor of Lisa Nowak)! Julie shared this message about today:
“Recognizing the bloggers who bring us such wonderful daily news and great pictures and videos seems like a nice tradition to start. I wouldn’t know nearly as much as I do about the chimps and their beautiful sanctuary without the blogs. Its really is wonderful to see the incredible things you do for the chimps and how much their lives have improved by being with you all. Your email is a cherished highlight of my day. Thank you so much!”
Julie, big, big thanks to you for all you do for the chimpanzees and for honoring Lisa and all of us today! We all love writing the blog so much! It makes it even more rewarding to know that sharing the lives of these wonderful chimpanzees with our amazing supporters is not only so welcome and enjoyed, but that it’s inspiring such compassion among our fellow primates.
Burrito, adorable man-chimp extraordaire:
Thank You Julie Lawell…I don’t know you but I like you A LOT ! Thank you for continuing the “Pay it forward Chimpanzee Style”!! ???? And even more “Thank You’s” to Lisa N., Meg L. and of course all the Bloggers who bring us all together by sharing the many adventures of Burrito, Jamie, Foxie, Annie, Jody, Missy and Negra ????????????????????????????
My pleasure, Lisa. We don’t know each other, but we have one huge thing in common–a love for Chimpanzee Sanctuary, all the chimps, all the caretakers and volunteers, and the idea that you can change what was a terrible life for these chimps to something so worth celebrating!
And, Burrito, you are my main man! What a hoot, and so winsome at the same time.
Thanks so much Julie, I have become an addict of the chimps!!!
Thank you for sponsoring a day for these special beings! Great pictures of the handsome Mr. B
Great pics! And that last one! I don’t know if Burrito is laughing, or if chimps “laugh” per se — perhaps that feeling is expressed another way? — but because it appears to be a laugh, well, I laughed! A big one, too. is a messenger of the universe’s joy. If only he knew what joy he spreads.
Hi Francoise,
Great question! Burrito is an adorable goof who loves to play with his caregivers. He typically has something in his mouth to bite onto and this gets amped up during play so he has some great faces. Yes, chimps do laugh! Though they are often inaccurately depicted as smiling like humans (showing upper and bottom teeth) in the media and entertainment, they actually smile showing only their bottom teeth (known as a play face). When you see a chimp depicting a more human-like smile, it’s actually a fear grimace. And they have wonderful, breathy-pant laughter which we imitate when playing with them while trying not to hyper-ventilate haha. 😉 I’ve copied links to a couple of our past blogs that might give you a better idea.
