Burrito with shot of smoothie and coconut

Summer Lovin’ 2015 Party Video

September 27, 2015 by Diana

As promised, below is the Summer Lovin’ Party video. This video is a thank you to everyone who made a Summer Lovin’ donation as part of our Summer Biddin’ online auction. The chimpanzees certainly deserve a party!

As the video mentions, Burrito really won the day by keeping his cool when he snagged one of the coconuts.

Burrito with shot of smoothie and coconut

Burrito has come a long way and knows a lot more about how to navigate the social world of chimpanzees than he did when the chimpanzees arrived at the sanctuary seven years ago!

I hope you enjoy the lighthearted video:

I searched previous blog entries to better understand this entry’s reference to Burrito’s social intelligence maturing over time. However, I still do not understand the connection to coconuts. Would a staff member be willing to elaborate? Thank you in advance for any insight, and for all of your kind and compassionate work for these animals.

Burrito is very excited about food, and coconuts are a very exciting food item for all of the chimps. It would be easy for a less socially savvy chimpanzee to flaunt the fact that they snagged one of the coconuts, thereby drawing attention to themselves and having the other chimps possibly either approach that chimp for some of the coconut or get irritated that they have the whole thing to themselves.

Burrito didn’t always understand the nuances of chimpanzee social life, but he’s really matured in the last few years, so he knew to be very casual about the fact that he had one of the coconuts and he didn’t draw attention to himself.

I hope that makes sense! Thanks for the question!
