Chimpanzee Problem Solving

May 23, 2015 by Diana

This is the story of Jody and the sheet. Jody was quite determined to untie this sheet from the fire hose and bring it in with her to make her evening nest.

It appeared to be an easy task at first – she quickly untied one end, but the second end proved more difficult because it was just a bit out of reach. She tried to climb the hose and untie the sheet at the same time, but, even with opposable toes, this did not work out.

She came up with a pretty brilliant solution.

Jody is not known for her athletic skills or her desire to solve puzzles, but when she wants something, she is one determined lady. It goes right along with our most recent e-news article about chimpanzee minds and bodies at work.

I think my favorite photo is #19. What’s yours?

What a clever girl! #21 is my favourite – success!

That was a close second favorite for me. She definitely has that look of satisfaction on her face!

This photo essay is awesome. It proves that a picture really is worth a thousand words. How long did it take her to get the blanket untied?

I took the photos with my phone and just looked to see the time stamps. The first photo was taken at 5:36 and the last at 5:41. There was a minute or two in there where she climbed up on the platform and reached for the fire hose with the sheet still tied on, but she couldn’t quite reach it. That’s was right before she climbed onto the window ledge. I could almost see the light bulb go off.

5 minutes?! Incredible. I know a lot of humans, including myself, who would have failed. The light bulb analogy reminds me of when I took my dog herding for the first time. He didn’t have a clue what to do, then they brought in a working dog. And the light bulb went off. It was amazing to watch. Chimps, however, far exceed dogs in their supply of light bulbs!

The photos are fabulous but small… Anywhere we can see them larger?

You can click on individual photos, then click on them again for a full view. With so many photos, I thought presenting them smaller would be a good idea, but I like to see bigger photos too:)

#11 and #22! In #11 it appears she has finally figured it all out (or is going for it with on last gasp of gusto) and in #22 she is absconding with her blanket booty and (I am sure) feeling pretty darn pleased with herself! ; )

Jody is one smart and crafty gal!

    Great photos! Love #19 too.
    Is that the new enclosure?

It’s not a new enclosure – this is what we call the greenhouse- there are removable panels that enclose the entire space to keep it cozy nearly year round.
