The distractor

March 11, 2012 by Jackie

Foxie is excellent at distracting people from what they are doing. She chooses the moment we’re getting ready to lock up the chimp area at night to drop her troll doll outside of the caging and then beg for us to give it back to her. And then, she just can’t seem to catch it when we toss it back to her (even though she is a fantastic catcher). Today, she was all about distracting both me (from cleaning) and Jamie (from nesting).

This is wonderful. I love the way Jamie hands Foxie a folded blanket in an attempt to stop Foxie bothering her. However, Foxie won this round. 🙂

Foxie can be a rascal when your trying to make proper nests. I love how she made you laugh with that big clap. 🙂

I also was wondering if a chimp gave a person the playful bites they give each other would they be much too strong for us and hurt the human, despite not intending to hurt.

Chimps have large protruding brow ridges, the size of which is connected to the strength in their jaws. That should give you a pretty good idea of how strong a chimp’s bite can be, even when trying to be gentle during play. Also, chimps’ moods fluctuate very rapidly, making them literally predictably unpredictable. They can very quickly go from play to fighting in a matter of seconds, so the dangers of allowing them to “playfully” bite you would be considerable.

Foxie just loves the company! She doesn’t want you to go home at night, and she doesn’t want to waste a nap when there’s someone to play with (after all, the Troll babies can be rather boring at play.)

I love seeing them laugh; I can’t imagine them ever doing that in their former lives (well, maybe Jaime) so it’s such a joy to see them having so much fun!
