KOMO 4 News Broadcast

September 26, 2011 by Diana

Watch the broadcast footage that was aired on Seattle’s KOMO News last night and will air again tonight at 6pm: http://www.komonews.com/news/local/130546448.html

Thanks to Eric Johnson for reporting and Eric Jensen and Sara Givens for filming!

P.S. J.B. Mulcahy hasn’t changed his last name – it was just a little mistake. We are married, but have different last names.

I stayed up way past my bedtime to watch the piece on KOMO. It was well worth the wait. It melted my heart to see all the chimps go outside for the first time. I felt so bad for Neggie though when she got zapped not once but twice on the fencing. Bless her heart. I am constantly amazed at the progress each and every chimp makes and love watching each tiny step in their now happy and content lives. Thank you CSNW for all you do !

I watched it first thing this morning. What a wonderful way to start the day.

I’ve saved it in my YouTube channel so I can watch it some more.

I loved Burrito’s dance! And I think that was he doing the hugging, right?

This is such a wonderful story. I love how it gives some of the background, and that first shot of a chimp hand in a lab is a killer.

It’s too bad Loulis, Tatu and Dar can’t come for a play date, given as they’re so close. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Kudos to KOMO for doing the story justice. What an amazing piece. Burrito always manages to melt my heart…his dance, his hug, even his sprint back to the enclosure just makes me love him. So happy for everyone at the sanctuary.

Wonderful coverage. Good old KOMO, they have come through for non-human species for years. Karen and I drd’d it and watched it at least 20 times. So heartwarming and wonderful. Thank you to everyone who worked on or donated to this project.

The people that sit around me at work all know if they hear sniffling coming from my cubicle, I’m watching or reading something about the CE7. They got epic sniffling when I was watching this!!

What a great piece from KOMO!!

Question…………………….Knowing that it’s a rainy, blustery day in the PNW today, do you let the chimps out? If you do, what was it like for them being out in the rain?

We can NEVER say thank-you enough CSNW!!!

Great media coverage, beautiful filming, masterful editing, powerful storytelling! Many kudos to the KOMO team for their excellent work!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ (LOL – even if they DID get JB’s last name confused.)

Question to the CSNW folks: I only count 6 chimps racing out the gate when the outdoor enclosure first opened … but my eyes could be fooling me. Did one of the chimps not make it out in that first excited rush?

It’s Negra that you don’t see at first on camera. She generally is the last one in line.

wow, what a great news report. I love the video, watched it 5 times ๐Ÿ™‚ But poor Neggie, that shock from the fence scared the daylights out of her. That has to be the fastest Negra has moved in a long time. How brave she was to come back out after that. Loved Burrito’s dance and all the hugging. Especially the one of Annie and Burrito hugging, Burrito looked so happy and the hug was so long ๐Ÿ™‚ Oh and Anna, I counted just 6 coming out too at the beginning. Maybe it was Jody who didn’t come out at first?

Question: Out of curiosity, what is the other country that still allows research on chimps???

This article says that Gabon is the other country that allows research on chimps.

Thanks so much to Chimp Sanctuary NW for all you do.

I want to know that too Carrie. I thought the US was the only country now.

    • Diana says

      September 26, 2011 at 7:38 pm

Yes, Michelle is correct – it’s Gabon. Sometimes people say the U.S. is the only industrialized nation that still uses chimpanzees in research.

Glad they got your name correct, J.B., in the 6:00 show!

This was a very powerful piece, my god, I canโ€™t stop watching it. Nor can I watch it without tears in my eyes. What an amazing day. Thank you KOMO for doing the story justice. Thank you to all the volunteers and donors who helped make Youngโ€™s Hill a reality. Thank you to the dedicated and incredible CSNW staff who make the CE7 feel safe and loved every day, so that when their world is suddenly immeasurably expanded, they are ready to take on the adventure.

And a very heartfelt thank you goes to J.B. for working his backside off day in and day out on the construction.

And also to Keith – without his dream, sacrifice and bravery, NONE of this would be possible.

that reminds me… was Keith there to see the chimps venture out for the first time?

I’m sitting here with the tears still wet on my cheeks, but have to say I loved, loved being able to see it all really happen for the Seven! I actually was very impressed with how bravely they all went out there, considering some had never been outside ever before! I was sad Negra touched the fence, and hope those lessons are learned and she can forge ahead to really being able to be comfortable out there. It was a great news report too, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a great beginning for some very deserving chimps.

Ditto to all that Dawn said. The video was moving and the hugs were awesome. Also, thanks for updating the chimp pal pages. This was a Job Well Done. Thanks to everyone.
