Day Two

September 21, 2011 by J.B.

I would never have guessed in a million years that Burrito would be this comfortable hanging out on Young’s Hill. He is walking around like he owns the place!

Jamie spent the day today checking things out, while Missy is just kicking back and relaxing on top of the structures and in her hammock.

Despite the fact that everyone went out yesterday, some have shown more caution today. Negra has been out twice, but not very far and not for long. Jody came out briefly but was not ready to let her guard down. And Foxie and Annie have yet to venture back out.

Yesterday was a complete surprise. Today is more like what we expected. This is a huge change in their lives, and they will each become comfortable with it in their own time and on their own terms. I don’t think it will take them very long.

Thank you, thank you for posting more photos. I keep checking in to see if there is any news. I love the photo of Missy standing up in the trees. So wonderful to see her amidst vegetation. It is so great that they all have a choice of where to hang out. To each his own.

Are they eating any grass? It was such a treat for them to eat while they were in the greenhouse. Now that they can pick their own, I wonder if it still has the same appeal.

Good question, Kat. I haven’t noticed anyone eating grass yet, but that may change when the excitement begins to die down a little.

Wonderful! It’s going to be fascinating to see how this new chapter in the 7’s lives affect them, their self-confidence and their relationships.

It is so nice to hear how Burrito has taken to the outdoors!! What a change! And yes, thank you for more pictures. They are truly beautiful standing out among the greenery.

It made me chuckle. The picture of Missy in the bamboo looks like a clear version of all those blurry “bigfoot” pictures you see.

So far, in quite a few of the pics, they have been bipedal. Is that a coincidence, or have they been walking around upright more when outdoors?

    • J.B. says

      September 21, 2011 at 4:17 pm

We thought the same thing. In fact, last year we nicknamed her “Lil’ Bigfoot” because she appeared in this pose so often in our photos 🙂

Chimps will often walk bipedally when they are excited or apprehensive – it helps to look bigger than you really are if you think you might have to defend yourself. Also, it helps them see over the tall grass.

Mr. B is a changed man…. today for lunch out on the hill all B wanted to do was play with J.B. A whole tray of food right in front of B and he just wanted to play… I don’t know this chimp.

Wow, what a change. I guess he’s just too excited to eat, which is amazing in and of itself!

Mr. B ignoring food to play? I think I’m in shock! lol, glad he is enjoying himself.

Yes, I really love that one of Missy out in the grass among the bamboo. Looks like a chimp in the wild, which is exactly what it should look like. Absolutely terrific job to all of you!

It’s so interesting to see the varied reactions. The quiet become bold. The confident wonder about their world and decide to hang back. They seem to understand that there is no rush..and that is what this is about. They get to decide, explore and try for themselves. To discovery and recovery!

Wow, thanks for the great pictures. Has Burrito displayed? I noticed in his picture his hair is up (big man on campus). Makes my heart smile to see them outside. It will be interesting to see what spot Negra picks to enjoy the great outdoors.

So wonderful! More photos, video, and ANY news from Young’s Hill is greatly appreciated!

I wonder if being outside and a growing confidence will allow Burrito to act more like an Alpha male?

These wonderful chimps deserve the best and their getting it.When i look at their faces and into their eyes, they seem so happy. I, like everyone else become so attached to them, that whatever brings them joy, brings all of us joy as well. The pictures are wonderful, thank you and thank you to the wonderful caregivers, who bring so much love into their lives.

All of you at CSNW and everyone that has ever made a donation of any amount, large or small should feel very proud. All of you have done something that can’t easily be thanked through words. It is better explained by doing nothing more then looking at Annie, Burrito, Foxie, Jamie, Jody, Missy and Negra in the face and eyes. The pictures you posted above really share that. You have all really made a difference for more then just these lucky little ones. Hopefully this helps change others views of how other species of any type should be treated and the emotions and personalities they obviously have and express. I hope they each live to be a thousand+ years old if for nothing else then to enjoy the lives they are currently living and have always deserved. This new out door area for them and everything else that you all have done for them makes me think of the famous Ghandi quote, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

Well said, Devin. I love that quote of Gandhi’s as well as “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. Seeing these wonderful seven enjoying life, their surroundings, each other and care givers brings such joy to us all. Cheers for the Seven and their care givers and supporters.
