Reprieve for Alamogordo Chimpanzees

December 31, 2010 by Diana

My family lives in New Mexico and my very sharp and active 89-year-old grandmother, who is a supporter of the Cle Elum Seven, sent me word of this great news this morning.

(for background information about the Alamogordo chimpanzees, visit: http://retirethechimps.org/)

Here’s the beginning of a story that the Albuquerque Journal published today:

Chimps To Stay in N.M. for a While

LAS CRUCES — The nearly 200 chimps housed at a federal facility in Alamogordo have won a temporary reprieve from being transferred to another site, where they were to become test subjects, according to the Governor’s Office.
In a phone call received late Thursday afternoon, an official with the National Institutes of Health informed Gov. Bill Richardson that the chimps will not be transferred until the National Academy of Sciences completes a review of policies related to the use of chimpanzees in biomedical research, according to a governor’s spokeswoman.
The review is expected to postpone the chimp transfer for about two years, said Richardson spokesman Alarie Ray-Garcia.
“Until the study is completed, there will be no transfer of the chimps,” Ray-Garcia said.

This means that Negra’s daughter Heidi, Foxie’s son David and Jody’s daughter April will not be put back into research, at least for the time being. And it means that we still have time to let our voices be heard so that they and all of the chimpanzees can be retired permanently.

That really is great news to end the year on and as you say puts a bit more time on the clock that is ticking away for the Alamogordo Chimpanzees. Especially as there is an extended part of the Cle Elum 7 family involved.

Lets hope the number of voices increase and that they are heard by the people who can make the decision to retract the move completely and allow the chimpanzees to have a well earned retirement.

All the best to you all at CSNW and all here on the blog, may 2011 bring you all success, health and happiness in your lives.

    Happy New Year
    Marie & Peter.

yes we need to get the ones sent to research transferred back to almagordo or better still, transferred directly to a sanctuary, those poor babies must be in a horrible state again

There shouldn’t be those places of horror. How can ANYONE see how they are used and treated ever be part of thier nightmare?

Oh thank goodness, what great news ~ my eyes teared up in relief. Hopefully this is a sign of much needed change to come and helps give us all some time to help facilitate that. And yes, any word on if the others will be transferred back or something we can do to address that??

Kate – I haven’t heard anything about attempting to return the group that has already been transferred to San Antonio. I do think that working to get greater support for GAPA – the Great Ape Protection Act – is what is needed for that group and all of the other chimpanzees in laboratories. Here’s a link about GAPA: http://pcrm.org/resch/gapa/

HAPPY NEW YEAR to the Alamogordo Chimps! This is fabulous news!!!!

And a happy, happy New Year to all the CSNW staff and volunteers. It can’t be said often enough … I so very much appreciate all you give to, and do for, the Cle Elum Seven. 🙂 May your coming year be filled with joy, success, discovery … and happy, healthy chimps.

That’s great news. What a positive way to start the New Year. A relief to all concerned. I hope they now see sense and release these poor creatures to a sanctuary to live out the rest of their lives in comfort.

I was brought to tears when I heard about this. I want to see all of them living in a sanctuary by the end of this new year. They have given so much to science and they deserve a peaceful, happy retirement. It’s time we treat our closest cousins with respect, dignity and love.
