New camera!

December 21, 2010 by J.B.

The chimps aren’t the only ones receiving gifts this holiday season. Our Board of Directors has generously donated the digital SLR camera from our wishlist. It’s similar to Diana’s personal camera that we have been using, but it has the added capability of recording video.

Because it accepts all of the same zoom lenses, we can now film the chimps in areas of the building that were previously out of range for the point and shoot camera. Plus it will allow us to get great close up video when they are roaming their two-acre enclosure this summer. Take a look:

The CSNW Board Members may have thought they were giving the staff members a holiday gift but in reality they gave all of us blog followers the best gift ever. Thank you.

I know I am repeating Denice & Charles but Thank You for the best gift ever! Seeing Foxie’s pucker, Burritos’s sweet face, Negra coming out of her shell & the sweet friendship of Annie & Missy – well, it’s just beautiful!

I second Julie’s woo hoo, I love the close-ups of Burrito’s handsome face, Foxie’s bright and dancing eyes, Negra joining in more and more and of course Annie and Missy. Thank you CSNW Board of Directors, well done!

    Questions:
    1) Does Annie kiss anyone other than Missy?
    2) If so, does she always cup their chin, the way she does Missy’s?
    3) I noticed that Missy was biting, obviously not hard, her brow. Is there any significance between a regular kiss and a kiss that has a bite? Does it show the trust Annie has in Missy?
    4) The few brow bites I’ve seen were on Chimp Eden and it always seemed to be the brow. Are there any other spots that may get a bite?

      1) & 2) I’m sure she has, but it’s rare enough that I can’t think of any examples. She doesn’t always cup Missy’s chin but we do have at least one photo of her doing that.
      3) Yes, I think your explanation is correct. You know how retreat facilitators make people do trust falls to help strengthen relationships? I think those soft bites are a similar form of bonding between friends.
      4) Ears, fingers, toes, arms, legs – even lips. I think we have two videos of Foxie biting Jamie’s lip during a play bout. In those cases, you could tell that Foxie was being especially careful to signal to Jamie that it was all in good fun. She approached slowly, did a lot of breathy panting, and paused every once and a while to allow Jamie to back out if she wanted to.

Thank you to the Board for the wonderful Christmas present!!! WOW!! You could count the hairs on the chimps chin! That is up close and personal. It was so good to see the eyes and the emotions that couldn’t be seen before. They are such beautiful creatures. What an even greater joy, if that is possible, it is going to be to to watch the blog this coming year!!

What a great acquisition the camera is for all concerned. You can see how sharp everything is instantly and some great shots and videos are going to be captured for everyone to see. Great idea and gift. Good choice all the best with it.

I am with the rest of the bloggers! This is a gift to us too and I also extend my thank yous to the Board. The only thing better than watching the Seven is watching them with such detail and clarity.
J.B., isn’t biting lightly also a show of trust? I saw the chimps at CE doing this and it included arms, brows, shoulders and other parts. The interesting thing was the chimp doing the biting was always very gentle and the one being bitten was usually watching closely but calm. One of the brow bites I witnessed was between a timid female and a newly introduced male. What amazed me is both chimps were raised in isolation away from other chimps. Is this trust test instinctual between chimps?

Yes, I think it is a show of trust and it probably is instinctual to some degree. It is amazing how gentle they can be.
