Burrito in the greenhouse

March 24, 2010 by Elizabeth

Although the girls have been spending the majority of the daylight hours playing, grooming, nesting, and resting in the greenhouse since it was completed, Burrito has been much more hesitant to go out. He usually has the indoors to himself during the day while everyone else enjoys the 75 degree weather outside. Even the lure of food hasn’t been enough to tempt him outside for more than a couple of very nervous minutes (and everybody knows how much Burrito loves food!).

He’s making remarkable progress, though. In the last few days, he has begun to come out into the greenhouse for a few minutes at a time (even with no food incentive). This morning, he spent about 20 minutes in the sun grooming Jody and playing with his human friends. I don’t think I can express how happy we all are to see him gaining so much confidence!

It is so interesting to me to see Burrito next to his female companions. He is so much bushier and bigger. It is great to see him beginning to enjoy the wide, wide world of outdoors. He seems to be feeling safer and more trusting…..thanks to you wonderful folks.

I love seeing him outside with girls and interacting with the caregivers. Thanks to your gentle persuasion at first, Burrito is now able to enjoy being outside. Great work!

It makes us so happy to know that Burrito is less anxious of the outside area now. Dear friend.

    Burrito……………… aka. Mister B, Bean, B.

    What I love about Burrito

(Please bear with me as my writing skills are non-existent).

I love that Burrito is the only male in the bunch, I love that B (that’s what I like to call him) is a perfect gentlemen to me. He is known to spit, to bang and to be very intimidating to caregivers but for me he has been non of that, he has been a perfect gentlemen, thank goodness as he can be very intimidating. I love that food is the biggest thing in B’s life, about 30 to 20 minutes before a meal he is doing the “food dance” hanging around the door to the kitchen, dancing back and forth, climbing the caging to see into the kitchen. I love the fact that he will eat “anything” by the handfuls, while the “girls” will take green onions and bit off the root “B” will eat the root end without a hesitation. I love how when serving him his share of smoothy in the morning he will use both index fingers to hold the glass and he wants all that is in the glass even if you have to shake it to get it all to come out. I love how he will take over a nest of another who has moved on. I love how he will spend time with Negra grooming and just hanging out with her. I love his food “squeaks” not just good grunts. I love how “B” is really motivated buy food in general. I love how to make things interesting he will rattle the caging in the front rooms just to make the girls angry (which usually gets him in trouble with the girls). I love that “B” never displays at his caregivers but will try to let the girls know that he might be in charge (which he is not). I love that when he does display he stands upright and grabs his thighs with his hands and swaggers back and forth. I love when serving “B” that you can’t give him chow fast enough so we wants it served to him by the food shoot. I love how he likes to sit on the turn style so that you at eye level with him. I love how when he wants something (food) he will give raspberries. I love that “B” is NOT a tool user and is very good at giving raspberries to let you know what it is he wants. I love the time he spends with Negra grooming and just hanging out. I love how “B” loves wood as an enrichment (if it’s wood “B” likes it). I love how “B” loves tummy and back rubs from his caregivers. I love how “B” enjoys having his caregivers blow in his ears. I love that “B” will play bite the caging and will give a muffled laugh like he is too manly to laugh out right like the girls do. I love that “B” is becoming more comfortable coming out into he greenhouse and just hanging out.

    Have I mentioned I love “B”.

Yay for Denice! 🙂 Installment #3 was wonderful! Gee, I think you miiiiight just love Mr. B? That was kind of the gist I got, haha. You always give such great details, I just adore your chimp bio posts. Thank you! And Gayle, I’m with you, that shot of Mr. B at the end was very striking, indeed.

It is sooo good to know that Burrito is finally feeling comfortable in the greenhouse. You caregivers ROCK!!!! Thank you for your love, patience, and ability to give the chimps what they want as well as what they need.
