Below is the photo of Negra taken on the first day she was in sanctuary and a photo taken just an hour ago. Negra continues to change. She’s been very playful and more active this winter than last. She still avoids conflict and likes to have blankets over her head. She has her favorite foods. And she still loves to see humans dance for her.
Negra’s continued signs of contentment are all because of the support that we have had from so many. Without individual donations, the sanctuary and the quality care that we provide would still be a figment of our imaginations. So much has happened in such a short amount of time, thanks to you all!
Today I wanted to say a special birthday thanks from Negra to a couple of people who are helping to get the stories of the Cle Elum Seven out into the world. Kathy Cochran, whose birthday is today and Margaret Parkinson, who celebrated her birthday on December 31st. These two remarkable ladies collaborated to create the book, Sanctuary: Year One that we have for sale in our online store. Thank you both and happy birthdays!
Negra on her first day at the sanctuary, after living in laboratories for decades
Negra tonight, finishing up the seeds from her night bag
Just another testament to the wonderful care CSNW has given these beautiful, amazing creatures.
We can never say “thank you” enough…………………………………………
The most significant difference I see is the change from empty eyes to bright, happy eyes. You all have given these chimps their souls back.
awww negra! you are so beautiful ?
What a difference in her eyes, the sadness is gone. Thank you for the love you give all of the chimps. I hope someday you will be gifted with more deserving chimpanzees from labs.
Her skin looks totally different – not just the increased level of pigment (which is amazing), but also its apparent plumpness and elasticity. This is a chimp that’s been eating a fabulous supply of natural oils, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Kudos to all of you for doing such a fabulous job of taking care of the CE7!!!
And it’s heartwarming to hear about how her engagement with the world is unfolding. 🙂
Thank you for taking such good care of Negra. Please tell her she is loved by a lot of people. I would love to see video of the humans dancing for her LOL
I bought the Sanctuary: Year One book, I wasn’t going to, at first, because I’m a daily blog reader and thought I’d seen and read it all. Well, I hadn’t, and I’m glad I changed my mind and bought it.
The book’s forward, from Jane Goodall, was great. The picture quality is fantastic. There’s a picture of the sanctuary, from atop the hill, that’s a painting waiting to happen. There are tons of pictures and it says a lot about the “7.”
I particularly liked the chapter on troll dolls, fashion and the ‘before and after’ chapters. I had a smile on my face the whole time reading it, thank you for publishing this book.
P.S. The calendar is wonderful and thanks for changing the ink, inside each day, to black. I can see it much better and love being able to look over and see January’s picture of Burrito.
What a great group of people our CE7 are……the caregivers aren’t bad either. 🙂 It is one of the great joys of our lives that we have been able to play a tiny part in giving them much much better lives that they would have ever dreamed of. You are right, Linda, I wish we could get more of these chimpanzee people our of the hell holes they are in. Perhaps someone’ great uncle will die and leave the chimps a billion dollars. 🙂 In the mean time the more people we can educate about chimpanzees and who they are the better. When enough humans know the human race will demand an end to this exploitation.
Candy, I too think the picture of the Sanctuary is the best “non-chimp” picture in the book.
I’m continually impressed with the volunteers and their level of commitment and remarkable diverse skills they bring to the table to help the CE7.
Thank you to all who are so dedicated to the CE7.
I love Negra. Something about her….
I continue to look forward to hearing Negra’s progress of healing at CE.
Happy Birthday Kathy & Margaret! ~ I bought the book “Sanctuary: Year One” too, and I LOVE it! You did a wonderful job! I’m looking forward to your next book! 🙂
*This first picture of Negra, to me, shows the years of stress & pain from being locked up in that laboratory basement for all those years. *Picture two shows a very healthy, relaxed & stress-free Negra! She looks so beautiful! What an amazing transformation, thanks to all of you at CSNW! So much improvement in all of the chimps in this first year…I’m looking forward to the many more improvements I’m sure we will see in the years to come! Thank you to all the staff & volunteers for all you do! You are THE BEST!!
I have Negra’s beautiful image in an ink drawing done by Colin Redmon ([email protected]) on my wall from the auction in October. Thank you, Colin….and CSNW!!!
Julie, I’m really happy you like the Negra portrait. it makes me happy to know it went to a good home. if you have time, and wouldn’t mind, i would love a photo of it on your wall to put on my website. thanks in advance!

I tried to write when this was posted but my computer wouldn’t work. Now everyone has said what I was thinking. What a transformation! I am glad to be a small part of it and am looking forward to what changes this year has in store for everyone.
She’s gorgeous!!
