Burrito the big kid

January 8, 2009 by Diana

Burrito just turned 26, which hardly makes him young. But we all know he is just a kid at heart. Below is some evidence… sometimes the best birthday gifts are the packages the gifts come in. What a nut 🙂

I’m sure that Burrito is still plenty rambunctious, but something about his eyes in the last picture borders on contented … which is in distinct contrast to the fear and uncertainty his eyes revealed in so many pictures shortly after he arrived in Sanctuary.

Of course, a snapshot can’t begin to reveal the bigger context of how he’s feeling or behaving, but still – it’s nice to imagine. 🙂

How cute…he has his own little house there! I just saw the news and see Seattle is having heavy flooding….very sad. I lived thru a flood and is was so traumatic! Hope all is well with everyone that lives there…evidentally CSNW is not being effected, otherwise you would have mentioned it Diana! I was worried about that after seeing the news! Tamela and I have been having such a time getting to the blog page…is anyone else having trouble?? I did let JB know!

You know, you just can’t beat a big box!!!

Between the rain and snow will us from the west ever get back??

I had a hard time getting to the blog today too!

Ohhhhh….such cute photo’s – just like the innocence of small children who use their imagination and play with pots, pans, boxes and “free stuff” over expensive toys they’ve been given. Lucky for Burrito, he’ll likely always be happy with fresh, yummy food and “the simple things in life” and never feel like he “needs” a porche to be happy! lol 😉

I have trouble getting to the blog sometimes too. Burrito, what a boy! Remember the contented feeling the day after a birthday? I hope that is what Burrito is feeling today.

What a great series of photos!! I don’t think I would have been able to resist climbing into that box either…it looks pretty fun!! 🙂

I am struck by the irony…Burrito climbing into a box and having fun because he wants to, with the freedom to get out whenever he chooses, as compared to being locked in a small cage for decades with no choice and no way of getting out. This box is definitely the better scenario!! I pray for all of the chimps still living in small cages, that someday they will all have the opportunity to live in sanctuary & play in boxes like this too. I’m so glad you had a happy birthday, Burrito!!! We love you & will be here with you to celebrate many, many more! 🙂

Some years ago I bought a cat tree. For the first several months my felines ignored the tree and instead played in the box it came in. I used to say that I spent $200 on a cardboard box that happened to have a cat tree in it. 😉

what’s he chewin’ on..looks like a piece of cork!?!
thanks Diana, great shots! love it..

got a kick out of the $200 cardboard box story ..
anyone ever put on empty tissue boxes on your feet when you were a kid!?! would love to see the chimps with them on their feet, slidin’ around!

hey Tamela – heard on the radio last night I Got A Brand New Pair Of Roller Skates and thought of you and Bo – now I can’t get it out of my head lol!

Burrito looks like he is content in his little house. I find it odd that he doesn’t avoid small spaces after being in a cage for so long but then it’s his choice which makes all the difference. He can get out of the box when he wants. The changes in the chimps since they first arrived at CSNW are phenomenal. It amazes me what resilient creatures they are. The love, trust, and respect they have been given has made as much difference as good food has. All you have to do is look in their eyes to know these chimps are finally happy and feel safe. How wonderful that must feel after all they have been through. Thank you all for giving them that and sharing it with the rest of us. It can only get better from here!
