Foxie and Negra

October 13, 2008 by Diana

Foxie continues to change… on Saturday, J.B. and I saw her display for the first time! She pant-hooted and even banged on the plexiglass window the way that Burrito does when he displays outside. I thought I was seeing things for a moment. Foxie is gaining so much confidence and obviously feeling more comfortable – I can’t wait to see what she does next!

Below is a photo of Foxie outside shortly after her display, with Negra behind her draped in a blanket.

And here is Negra – a photo I recently found and edited. I wish I could put into words how special and beautiful Negra is, but with images like this, maybe I don’t need words.

There they are, such beautiful beings. No words are really necessary, Diana, to express the beauty of Negra. She is the essense of beauty. And our Foxie! How about her! My heart is filled with gratitude that she got the chance to become who she really is after years of hell.

They are beautiful…you only have to look at them to see that each is special and beautiful in their own way.
I am so happy that Foxie is beginning to feel at home and that she has the choice to do what she wants. Its a warm feeling to know that they are in a safe place and loved at last.

Wow. Indeed, the portrait of Negra is so beautiful! She looks like an old soul.

I think you’ve stated before that, in the wild, displaying by females is unusual. Is this more common in captivity? Is she displaying primarily to the humans, or to the other chimpanzees?

I’d be SO surprised if the chimps didn’t harbor some frustrations that will get released through misbehavior, or maybe even agressiveness (not that what Foxie is doing, to date, falls into either category). Is there collective wisdom available through the chimpanzeee sanctuary movement that will help guide you through any bumps that might come along as the chimpanzees slowly heal from all they’ve been through?

Thanks for the continuing updates. I’m fascinated by the stories and pictures you share!

What IS it?? I feel like I’m experiencing some sort of phenomenon now – I just can’t believe how these photos of the chimps continue to simply blow me away. These are soooo awesome!!!! I’m mesmerized.

They are all beautiful and their look… so deep!

I so totally agree with what Shelly K said. It is so rewarding for me to hear how much each chimp is changing as she/he becomes more relaxed and safe. Each photo shows a new side, a more peaceful side, more playful at times, but most of all a more alive side. Thank you. I know I keep saying it but it seems like it isn’t enough.
How beautiful they are and how wonderful you are for making such a big difference in their lives.

What a beautiful “woman” she is…I still think you need to start your own cosmopolitan magazine with the 6 lovely ladies and gq with Burrito….
