Wow! We have received $2265 for the industrial washer and dryer and we know of another $250 on the way! I am so thrilled. It has all been through the blog community – from people who are avid CSNW blog readers and their friends. Thank you so much!! We’re very close to having a washer and dryer that can withstand the costant laundry we do in the chimp house. Thank you Margaret and Karen for starting this fundraising effort!
heya CSNW – it’s been tight with funds lately – I’m sorry it’s taking me so long .. I’m hoping that I can send you something this weekend; I really want to be a part of this. Congratulations on the amount so far (great!) and hats off to all the generous & wonderful people who’ve made this possible & who’ve been able to contribute so far, what a great community.
Hi All,
Congratulations on all that you have accomplished so far!! The chimps look happy!
Did you receive the ice cream maker that I sent? Have the chimps been liking the ice cream?
I wish that I could send more but have just been sending what i can every couple of weeks through the wish list.
Kudos to everyone who has donated for the washer and dryer!
Love,
Courtney
That is fantastic!
For those of you who haven’t been able to contribute, don’t feel bad. There will be something down the road that you will be able to help with and any of those who helped this time won’t be able to. It is all team work and over time everyone will do something. Besides money is not the only way to contribute. Writing letters to save other chimps, passing the word along, etc.; there are many ways and when all of us help where we can it brings warmth and joy to everyone. We have such a wonderful blogging community with all the things everyone does. I’m proud to be a part of it in any way I can.
Thanks.
that’s awesome Courtney! and thanks Jeani – I agree & appreciate your understanding .. if whatever I send doesn’t make it for the W&D they can definitely always use it for “running costs” (food or where ever it fits best for them!)
CONGRATS!!!!!!! Great idea M&K! Jeani ~ I’m in complete agreement!!
hi all – I don’t know what it’s like for everybody or for the rest of the country but all the tragedies & all the braveries that occurred on September 11, 2001 are usually not far from our minds here on the east coast – especially here in NYC (the absence of the Twin Towers is profound, unavoidable & a reminder). this actual day is always very somber & tearful – especially & enormously for all those who survived and for those who were so directly & deeply affected. on this day there is always a very moving ceremony of the “Reading of the Names” to commemorate, remember & respect all those who perished and all those who gave their lives to help save others .. we will never forget …
the following is an excerpt of Jen F.’s account (a former primate caregiver at Yerkes) of her day at work on 9/11/01, speaking about her friend Abby Chimpanzee ..
“September 11, 2001 is of course significant for all Americans because of the horrible terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington D.C. But that date is significant to me for another reason as well. It was the day that a six-year old girl named Abby was taken from her mother for a research study. Abby had been raised by her mother, Barbara, and had never been away from her, and had never lived anywhere but the rows of indoor-outdoor cages in which she had grown up. We – her caregivers – knew that Abby was to be taken, and the thought of it made me heartsick. I didn’t want anything to do with it ….
Then the terrorist attacks happened. A fellow coworker heard the news on the radio, and came to tell me ……
One of my coworkers said something that surprised me, but spoke volumes about how the research affected not only the chimps but also the staff. When I told this person of the planes being deliberately flown into the World Trade Center, the reply was, “I was just thinking about how anyone could do this to Barbara and Abby. Now I have my answer.” I’m sure people will think it’s inappropriate or outrageous to compare terrorists to biomedical researchers. But my coworker had a point. There is a shared trait – the lack of caring and compassion for others, the lack of concern for, or blindness to, suffering inflicted for a cause, whether the cause is God or Science.
The events of 9/11 stopped many aspects of life that day. Planes no longer flew, some businesses & government agencies closed temporarily. Most of us were shocked, grieving, glued to the television. But it didn’t stop the researchers at Yerkes from taking Abby from her mother……
Despite the threat and uncertainty, Abby was still driven into the city, away from her mother and everything she knew. She lived for a month or so in a met cage, and had a piece of her liver surgically removed. I don’t know why……….”
“Chimpanzees suffer no less, I promise you.” – Jen F.

there are other important accounts from other people there as well..
many sincere Thank You’s to them and Project Release & Restitution for all the work that you do
Dee,
Thank you for sharing this story and the web site. 9/11 is still a big deal to me but most of this side of the US does not do a memorial. I asked my principal if we were going to have an assembly because students were asking. His reply was no but the flag will be at half mast. I think we need to remember and remind others so that maybe one day peace will finally happen for both us and the animals. God bless those who care.
I finally taped up the care package, I put a check in there for 150.00 toward the washer/dryer, and also there is that “Change for Chimps” can in the box with close to 50.00 in it , maybe more, I didn’t count it , someone made me a key for you and I dropped it in the can, smart huh? So you will have to figure out how to unlock the lock! I will send it this weekend, I cannot send from work to a PO Box, I wanted to ship UPS, but oh well! I had to keep bringing bigger boxes home as I kept adding to the box, I hope the tape holds and it doesn’t bust open in shipping, I taped and double taped. Anyway that sould bring you up to almost $2700.00, yippee, almost there!
Scientist that put any animals into cages, and especially primates that are so close to human are more and terrorists in my book , they are Hitlers, they are taking the lives of these souls into their own hands, and sleeping well at night, after they leave the building, they all deserve the worst life possible, I hate them all for what they have done to the chimpanzees, I hate them so bably, and I will never forgive them, yes hate is a strong word, but what they have donw and what they are doing is just plain WRONG, and I want to climl to the top of a mountain and scream it out to the world. I had not a clue this has been going on, not a clue, yes I have heard of biological research but I had never seen or read an article on it in my life until I read the article from discovery magazine, I feel it is hidden from the american public as much as possible because it is wrong, most people I show the sanctuary to, and explain what has happened, they have never heard of it either. The reason I came across this , is because of all of the programs I have been noticing on animal planet about sanctuaries for chimps and Gorillas, I was researching that on the computer and that is how I ended up here. I had my own business and also worked a full time job, I haven’t lived under a rock, so why does most of the world not know about all of these primates, dog, cats , pigs, rats, being tortured for decades, locked in tiny cages and lving the life of someone on death row, but worse because they are being tortured on a daily basis in one way or another. That is why I am going to work on a petition, when I finish the myspace page, I am going to shout it from the highest mountain I can , the internet, I am going to spread the word so that we get more people in the world to help us STOP this disgrace and indignity that is happening and get these chimps to sanctuaries!!!!!
Poor Abby, my heart cries for her and her mommy, how could they do that to them. Just like the twin boys that were seperated after 21 years, taken away from each other, I am damn mad about this all, but at least it has awakened my heart to it so I can fight, and beleive me I fight hard for a cause when it needs to fought!
Okay I am finished venting, I need to work on the myspace page, so I can get to work on my petition and send it out to the world to hear!
Hi friends ~ I’d like to share with you the following very brief comment from author Neale Donald Walsch. The intention was to address the terrorist attacks but from my perspective, it can be applied for researchers testing on animals as well:
“There is one question that no one will ask of those who use
violence to make their point: What hurts you so bad that
you feel you have to hurt me in order to heal it?
This does not condone violence, but it can help us to
understand it — and to understand how to stop it. CwG
says, “No one does anything inappropriate, given their
model of the world.” Embracing the wisdom in those
eleven words could change the course of human history”
Animal testing is a complex topic and one that I look forward to communicating more about – so that we can all do whatever we can to support alternatives and end it for good and entirely.
This topic is one that I could sit here and write on until I drop over dead – I’ll have to stop here for now.
Prayers of healing for the entire planet from the terrible events of 9/11. Dee, hugs to you.
What wonderful news. A person at my art class today told me that she would give me a $100 check next week. So that makes us only $200 away from target!!! Thank you. Thank you. I agree totally that there are many ways to contribute to CSNW and none is any more important than others. All our blog buddies….CCC’s are fabulous people whose love, energy, action, money, care, gifts etc etc etc are fabulous. Thank you.
I just sent $30.00 to the w/d fund. I know it’s not a lot, but I support many other organizations and I have to be careful or I’ll get carried away and end up homeless. lol Everyone has done such a fantasic job! I had to be a part of The Great Washer/Dryer Movement. Did you guys decide on which w/d to get?
And- Margaret or Karen, what kind of art class are you taking? I’m an artist too. We really need a place to chat about chimp and non-chimp stuff.
My check is going in the mail today. Maybe if there is enough extra money for the washer and dryer, it could be used to get the storage shed on the wish list.
Hey all. I am continually impressed by everyone’s large hearts. Thank you so much. Regarding a place to chat, Shelly C. is hard at work getting the Myspace page up and running for CSNW – it is really starting to look amazing. (shelly – I fell asleep when sending you the photos last night – I’ll finish up this afternoon).
I think for chatting purposes, a forum would be ideal, and I am working on this – I swear. First I need to upgrade our version of the blog software, then I can add a forum. I’m trying to figure out the easiest forum free forum software that can be added to the blog, either just as a link or more integrated. I know everyone is anxious for this and I think it could be a lot of fun as well as be really informative. I appreciate how hard it is to have a conversation and get to know each other in the comments section of a blog 🙂
I cleaned the front rooms this morning and meditated on the issue of people who experiment on animals. I’ll try to get my thoughts together later today and post. I think Shelly K.’s comment that it is a complicated issue is very true… more later.
Diana
We lvoe the idea of any money for the w/d going toward the storage shed! If that is what the chimps want they should have it! 🙂
Tamela, I would love to see your art. I do watercolors and also oils. I take a class from a great teacher every thursday. In recent months I have been painting primarily animals and am excited about what is coming off the end of my brush. Currently I am painting a portrait of Jody. If I ever figure out how to use myspace I will put some of my painting up there.
Margaret and Karen, send me an email and I’ll send you the link to veiw my work. Some of it is a little risque so if you’re easily offended you may not want to visit. It’s still under constrution. None of my metal work is there yet and 100’s of paintings haven’t been displayed, but it’s a sampling. I’d love to share it with you. [email protected]
hI tAMELA, THAT TAKES YOU TO YOUR YAHOO EMAIL …..Also your pictures are still set to private…do you want to know how to take that privacy off???
i am dying to see the cats….
Shelly C., I know; I didn’t want to put my website up here because I didn’t want anyone to think I was soliciting. I don’t sell off my art website, but still… I’ll be glad to send you the link if you want me to. Just send me an email. I thought I took care of the myspace issue. I’ll check and if I can’t figure it out I may need you.
woo hoo .. mailed out this morning a little bit of $ towards the
new w & d! hope didn’t miss the boat!
