The Lookout

July 21, 2008 by J.B.

There is a window in the loft of the chimp house that looks out over the driveway. The chimps – Negra, in particular – like this spot because they can see the humans coming and going. When Sarah and I went into the playroom to clean this morning, we were not surprised to find a nest by this window. But with this nest there were just two toys from the dozens of new toys given out at yesterday’s party: a periscope and a pair of binoculars.

Can you believe it???? And we thought we were the only ones curious about others. How smart those chimps are.

Do these chimps have access to the outside, such as exists at The Center for the Great Apes and Save the Chimps? The house seems dark and grim. The caged effect did not sit well with me as an observer and primate lover.

Oh my gosh!!! That is SO FUNNY!! 🙂 This made me laugh so hard! I can just picture those little spies getting a close up view on the activity outside. This made my day!! 🙂 Thank you!

If this is not evidence that these are very smart, reasoning and curious people I don’t know what is. This is so touching. Maybe someone is also a bird watcher!

Hi JB ~ this story is going around like wildfire and I’m being asked whether it was a periscope or a telescope….periscopes are on submarine’s….not sure why it’s important, but I’m trying to answer questions coming back my way 🙂 Thanks JB!! Shelly

    Hi Shelly,

It’s a tiny toy periscope. But I’d love to find them a chimp-appropriate telescope (with plastic body and lenses), if one exists!

You guys have seen Chicken Run, right (aka the Great Escape)? If Negra ever starts throwing a baseball against the wall and catching it in her mitt, i’d install 24/7, 360 degree cameras and count the spoons at the end of the day.

Thanks JB – oh, we’ll get ’em that telescope if it exists!! We’re on it 🙂

I suppose after being in a basement all their lives they are interested in all the comings and goings, I cannot tell you how much this excites me, I am so happy for these abies….THANK YOU ALL for all you do to make everyday waking day exciting and happy until they fall asleep. I love how Jamie dresses up, cracks me up! Thank you again from the bottom of my heart, I wish I could help. I saved 2 puppies this mornig on a major hwy on my way to work, they evidentally do not have human parents that care for them, It took me 3 hrs on my way to work, so I called in sick and brought them back to my house until I could get them to safety, If we humans do not speak for and help these animals that have no voice who will?????
