Outdoor area

July 16, 2008 by Sarah

Great news! We are making progress on the chimpanzees’ outdoor area. It’s coming along very well, and we can’t wait to get the chimpanzees out into the sunshine. Here’s a picture from this afternoon.

I have come to the conclusion that I must have been a chimpanzee in my former life. I cannot begin my day without looking at your site to see what’s new. I am entranced by these girls and guy. Thank you so much for sharing not only the videos and pictures but your stories on what they do each day.

I have to agree with Patty, this is my favorite website and it makes my day everyday.

Aren’t you going to have some things that they can climb on and ropes so they can swing on?

We check into the blog every day too…..sometimes several times a day “just in case” something new has been added. 🙂

Patty, Debbie, Angela and Jenny ~ maybe we ought to have a Chimpanzee party one of these days. We could make enrichment things for the chimp’s like the cheerio necklaces or wrapping honey, peanut butter, raisens and nuts inside corn husks….sounds like fun to me! 🙂

Thanks for all of the great comments – I’m so happy the chimpanzees have made such a good impression on you all. I have to say that on the days when I do not go into the chimp house, I too check the blog – I’m alway eager to hear from J.B. and Sarah what happened that day!

To answer your question, Angela – we do have lots of fire hose hanging in the large playroom. I believe you can see it in some of the more recent photos. There is one particular piece of fire hose that Jamie does occasionally swing on. We haven’t seen most of the chimpanzees swinging, however. The environment they came from in the laboratory was so barren and small, they may not have experience swinging. When we clean the play room, I do try to demonstrate if I notice that one of the chimpanzees is looking my way, but I do not make a very good chimpanzee 🙂 I’m sure they will catch on eventually, or perhaps Jamie will teach them.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the tall climbing structure that will go in the middle of the outdoor enclosure. Stay tuned for photos of that!

I was wondering if you gave them glasses(Plastic )would they drink out of them?
I’m glad to see someone is caring for these beautiful mammals.
I can’t call them creatures or pets, or animals, as we all know they are very intelligent and it was a crime that they used them to experiment on, however I am sure they are very glad to be with you now.
If by chance, there time spend there, helped humanity in some way, then so be it, at least it is over now for them.
And hopefully they will all stop experimenting on chimps.
With the computer age now you would think they could find that a more useful application for there experiments.
Let technology be the future for there problem solving.
    Have a great day!

I have to day I’m jealous, I would love the opportunity to be a part of freeing these folks from there bad envirements and suffering.
You all deserve a Large shinning Metal, for your amazing ability to have this actually happen.
Freeing them is such a wonderful event, it mus t be so rewarding to release them from there crappy existence to these new cages with windows, and something for them to actually do, other than just be there.
Keep the photos coming I will be coming back for more.

This outdoor area looks WONDERFUL! I am so anxious to see them playing and climbing! 🙂 Do you have a ballpark target date of when you are hoping this area will be ready for them? ~ Also, Shelly, count me in for the Chimpanzee Party too! 🙂

I wish I could come to the party but I am in California. I told my husband my new dream before I die is to drive my RV to come and see my new favorite seven friends, I have been in too much pain to do much lately from a head on collison I had where I had to be cut out with jaws of life and air lifted to Napa to the hospital so I feel lucky to be here, and before I leave this earth I have to come and visit these new friends, I hope in the future there will be some sort of guest opportunities, maybe a weekend where we can pay so much money to spend helping out with chores and waking up to the 7.As soon as I am able I will help out on a regular monthly basis, I have always suppported the HSUS but I have to support this Sancuary as it has made a glimpse of hope in my heart that maybe possibly one day we will see this happening all over the world…..MAKE IT AND THEY WILL COME!!!!!!!
