Jody

July 16, 2008 by Sarah

We were going through old posts the other day and realized that Jody doesn’t get much publicity on our blog. This is probably because she seems to be an independent gal. She spends a lot of time interacting with the other chimpanzees, and she often greets JB with a very excited grunt, but throughout the day she’s less likely to seek us out for play or grooming than the others. We’ll all have to get to know Jody more together.

Do the chimps have an outdoor habitat of any sort where they are engaged with nature, climbing trees, picking berries? Now or in the future?

It doesn’t seem so from the photograhs.

How nice to see you, Jodi. Are you the “quiet one”. We are so happy that you have a home now where you can be yourself, do what you want and be who you are. We love you.

Thank you for your question, Dorothy.

The outdoor area is in process. We are all looking forward to the day when the chimpanzees can be outside in the sun for the first time in decades, if not their entire lives. Although we are not enclosing any trees, we will be building a tall climbing structures made from natural logs (which we are receiving as a donation). Our initial outdoor habitat is completely enclosed, and will allow for a lot of climbing and resting. We would love to enclose several acres of the property and allow the chimpanzees to roam. Chimpanzees are extremely strong and intelligent, so we would need to ensure that the enclosure was safe and we would not risk having a chimpanzee escape. We have begun to investigate the best way to enclose a large piece of land. No matter what we determine is the best method, it will be extremely expensive to build, and it is unlikely that we will have the money to do this large-scale project for some time. We will most definitely post photos of the chimpanzees outside as soon as their outdoor area is complete!

I have really enjoyed reading this blog from start to finish. Keep updating, I am very excited about the progress these chimps are making, and we appreciate the details.

Early on there was a lot of talk about Negra. how is she doing now?
will there be a better photo of her soon?
