Like Foxie, Annie has also been coming out of her shell lately. Annie is naturally a bit shy with humans, but over the last couple of days she has been interacting more with her caregivers and using more of the enrichment items that we put out each day. She has also started to give us a great chimp greeting each morning when we arrive for work. J.B.

Thank you again for sharing these special moments as our chimps learn about a new beginning. The food must be a real treat for them. Just think about all the new tastes. Why do you freeze some of the fruit? Is it easier for them to eat? Also, I think it is amazing that they all seem to get along together. Is this the case?

Hi Patty,
We often freeze fruit because we get too much at once and can’t use it all while its fresh. But we also do it because its interesting for the chimps, and it takes them longer to eaten frozen fruit, which keeps them occupied and extends their enjoyment of the meal.
The chimpanzees do get along together well, but its not always peaceful here. I’d say the chimps get in about 2-3 fights a day, on average. But they usually make up afterwards and, in general, no one gets hurt. Most of the time they are playing together, grooming each other, or taking naps next to one another.
