Born 1973 in the wild. Celebrated birthday: June 13th (the day the first seven chimpanzees arrived to Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest and, coincidentally, also Terry‘s birthday!).

Negra began her life in the forests of Africa and was captured there as an infant. The majority of her life has been spent in biomedical research laboratories but each year puts that past further behind her. She was used in hepatitis vaccine research and as a “breeder” in the labs. She had three children, all of whom, thankfully, are now living at other sanctuaries: Negra’s daughter Angel lives at Save the Chimps in Florida as does her son Noah, who is also one of Burrito‘s many half-siblings. Negra’s daughter Heidi was the last to reach sanctuary, but she now lives at Chimp Haven in Louisiana.

Negra is a strong individual with a unique personality and is the queen of the Cle Elum Seven chimpanzees. Negra enjoys the sheets and blankets that are provided to her at the sanctuary and is often seen with blanket is wrapped around her body and head like a hooded poncho. She is the chimpanzee most likely to be napping, but she will get up for favorite foods like peanuts and lettuce, and she loves to pick the spring pasture grass in the outdoor habitat.

Become Negra’s Pal today! Negra currently has 8 Pals!
