In memory of Grover

January 7, 2021 by Katelyn

Kathy Mills-George sponsored today in memory of Grover G. Mills Sr:

“You lived a beautiful life that was dedicated to peace, love and kindness. You’re still my inspiration!”

Thank you for thinking of the chimpanzees and choosing to add to their lives in sanctuary as you celebrate the memory of Grover and his legacy today, Kathy.

Happy Birthday, Burrito!

January 6, 2021 by Katelyn

And many thanks to you, Kathleen Corby, for being our second sponsor of this wondrous day of celebrating all things Burrito!

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY BURRITO! I wanted to honor you today on your 38th birthday simply because you are you, beautiful you. I celebrate you today because you bring joy to my heart. With one look at your face you can instantaneously place a smile on my face. You have proven that a happy, playful outlook on life, even after adversity, is the only way to live. You have taught me that I should find pleasure and bliss in the simple everyday things around me, even if it’s just a taste of my favorite food. Savor, savor it all. I am not certain if it was bravery, courage, loyalty, or all of these traits together that made you attack that nasty old rattler on that fateful day, but you demonstrated there are times in life when we need to take action, without hesitation, no matter what the consequences may be, because there are things in life worth defending. You are my hero Mr. B. and I love you more than words can say. May happiness shine upon you forever…. Chad said it best : “I honestly can’t imagine a life without Burrito.” Here’s to life with Burrito! Now bring on that pasta cam!!”

Happy, Happy Birthday, Burrito!

January 6, 2021 by Katelyn

Kathleen Zasimovich is the first of our sponsors for this extra special day in honor of our beloved fella, Burrito: “Happy, Happy Birthday, Burrito. You are our shining star.”

After everything Burrito has endured, and risen from, throughout his life so far (not to mention this last year plus), though it’s never been his job to do so, he has filled our hearts and lives with more light, joy, inspiration, courage, hope and love than one could imagine. Even more so during such a precarious time in life. He was born 38 years ago today and in that instant, the world was made a more magical place.

Thank you so much, Kathleen! Here’s to a day of celebration! Of food and play and food and play and food and play and everything and anything that makes Burrito’s heart sing right along with all of ours.

Happy Birthday, Bubbie!! We love you more than you will ever know.

Simple joys

December 28, 2020 by Katelyn

When I opened the raceway to Young’s Hill this morning, there might as well have been crickets chirping for the lack of any other noise or activity. It’s been on the chilly side since our Christmas day snow and understandably, the chimpanzees seemed content to stay inside. When Anthony radioed me later in the day to let me know the chimps were outside, I ran out just in time to catch several people gathering snow snacks, like the true Pacific Northwest Mountain Chimpanzees they have become.

Missy and Annie:

Missy eventually decided to take her snacks to go and made her way back to the warm chimp house:

And Annie was soon to follow:

Icicles along the eaves of the chimp house:

Foxie was next to venture out, followed closely by a tentative Burrito, but she quickly realized she’d dropped her Orange Blossom doll and doubled back to fetch her from the snow. She and Orange Blossom then decided to head up to the structure Annie and Missy had left, at which point Burrito exited stage right and ran back inside for a (warmer) game of chase:

By the time Foxie made it back inside I noticed everyone making nests and trying to get warm so I served a batch of warm tea and then they all spent the rest of the afternoon in cozy nests napping and grooming one another. On the other side, things looked pretty similar, with Mave, Willy B and Honey B venturing into their outdoor chute for a time and eventually winding up back inside in a chimp pile grooming the rest of the winter day away until dinner time.

Here’s a funny story. To me, anyway. 😉 Yesterday I was cleaning the front rooms and Honey B was downstairs with me while Mave and Willy B were upstairs in the mezzanine. Well, let me rephrase that…I was in one front room cleaning while Honey B had access to the other two because she chose not to go upstairs with Mave and Willy B. So this is a little unusual as typically the three are in the same areas together while we clean, but as we often note, one of the most important things we provide in sanctuary is choice. And yesterday, Honey B chose to do things differently.

I’m pretty sure she thought this arrangement was the best thing ever because who needs to clean when you can play?! The entire time I was trying to clean, Honey B was racing around, laughing, standing on her head, leaping about and just so entirely joyful, I had to join in. Of course, every time I tried to take her photo she’d just stop and stare at me as if to say, “There’s nothing to see here.” But this is the best part. At this point, Honey B was wearing a blanket like a cape (because, of course she was!) and she suddenly grabbed another and pushed it out of the caging, asking me to take it. So naturally, I put it on like a cape, too. Well, you should have seen her face! And that was it, scrub brush temporarily forgotten, we both donned our Wonder Women capes and raced each other back and forth, laughter and capes flying behind us like the wind. Honey B. She is such joy and a surprise every single day.

Have a wonderful evening, everyone!

A family through the seasons

December 21, 2020 by Katelyn

It was still a little dark when I arrived at the chimp house this first day of winter morning. I always like to greet the chimpanzees by quietly opening their doors and whispering “good morning” so they know it’s me. Just as one would in anyone’s home, we try our best to start the day quietly, leaving their lights off until they are up and active. Of course some days they’re already hooting and hollering before we even walk in the door, but that’s their business.

The construction folks start their day even earlier than we do and Mave, Willy B and Honey B are usually up by the time we arrive, their space lit softly from the workers’ lights next door. But when I poked my head in their door all was still and quiet, the only light, their Christmas tree. That’s when I spotted Honey B, right across from the tree, sound asleep in her nest with the blanket pulled up to her chest. I wish you could have seen her! By the time I pulled out the camera, she was up and ready to say hi. Solstice morning made, right there.

Much of the day was shrouded in fog and rain which kept us all indoors for the first part of the day:

As the chimpanzees shifted seamlessly throughout their home as the humans cleaned around them, I feel like every time I looked at them, they were busy. Jamie sitting in her nest looking at her books, Honey B engaging in her daily ritual of dragging all the warmest and heaviest blankets out into the chute where she builds a cozy nest and sits and watches whatever it is she watches, Burrito on an endless loop of chase with a steady stream of humans, Foxie playing with her dolls in between fiercely kicking the neighbors’ door and yelling chimp profanities at them, Jody wrestling with Burrito and Negra wrestling with Burrito and Foxie wrestling with Negra, everyone sitting together grooming, everyone curled up napping.

All the while, we humans wound our way through an ever-shrinking path that winds between ever-growing heaps and stacks of holiday gifts for the chimps (thank you!!!). Doing laundry, cleaning this and cleaning that, baking sweet potatoes and apples, serving meals, doing dishes, spending time with our chimp friends, Christmas trees aglow. I don’t know, all this to say the entire day felt so much like one big family, hanging out at home, weaving between one another, together and alone.

Willy B enjoying a movie:

Beloved Annie only has eyes for her best friend, Missy, and to be precise, Missy’s whereabouts. Once the rain stopped, Missy, along with Burrito and Jody, raced up the hill on a mission. Annie declined traipsing through the wet grass (can’t say as I blame her), but waited patiently in the greenhouse doorway, her eyes peeled for Missy’s reappearance:

After zooming around, Missy decided to take in the foggy sights, like the true Pacific Northwest chimpanzee she has become:

And Annie watched. And Annie waited:

Then there was Mave. When Mave is excited, be it playful, angry, greeting her chimpanzee friends, or otherwise, she becomes a spring. Quadrupedal, she literally springs straight up into the air (at least a foot or more off the ground) and she does this repeatedly. It’s impressive and unexpected all at once. It’s hard to capture because you just never know when she’s going to do it for sure. While we cleaned the mezzanine, she was enjoying some time to herself in the front rooms and whenever I walked by she’d suddenly be airborne in a bounce, then play bow and roll over laughing, and the next she would look like this, as if nothing had happened and I was making up the tallest of tales. She is a joy and a surprise every minute.

May you all find the rest, comfort, beauty and magic held in the special days and long nights that this solstice season holds. May you celebrate something every day, no matter how small. And may you know in your hearts how deeply we appreciate you being part of our chimpanzee (and bovine!) family.

Happy, Happy Birthday, Linda!

December 18, 2020 by Katelyn

Linda Webber is being celebrated by her family today! When Linda asked for donations for the chimpanzees in lieu of birthday gifts, her family got together and sponsored not one, but two days of sanctuary for her and the chimps!

From Aimee Kaufman and Adam Webber: “To the woman who taught us empathy and compassion, it seems only fitting she would want a donation in her name on her birthday. Happy Birthday Mom. Love Adam and Aimee.”

From Dennis Webber: “It’s Linda’s xx birthday. All she wanted for her birthday is to donate to the sanctuary, as it gives her so much pleasure.”

Thank you so much, Aimee, Adam and Dennis for this thoughtful gift! Linda, we hope you have a wonderful birthday and many more to come!
