Happy Birthday, Julie!

June 16, 2021 by Katelyn

Many thanks to Karen Olson, one half of our wonderful long-time supporter and sister duo, who is celebrating the other half, Julie Olson, by sponsoring a day of sanctuary! You loyal blog fan followers may recall recently seeing Julie’s Sponsor a Day in honor of Karen! 🙂

“My sister loves the chimps and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate her birthday.”

Happy Birthday, Julie! We are so grateful to you both for your love of the chimpanzees and all you’ve helped bring to their lives. We hope you have a beautiful day of celebration and joy!

And your pal, Burrito, I suspect, would wish you lots of birthday shenanigans:

Julie Olson, thank you so much for sponsoring today in celebration of your sister, Karen Olson! Oh gosh, we so appreciate you both for your long-time friendship of the chimpanzees and all you both help make possible for them. Happy Birthday, Karen! We hope you have a beautiful day and do a lot of chimp approved fun stuff!

“I wanted to sponsor a day for the chimps in honor of my sister Karen’s birthday. She has followed the chimps story since they arrived in Cle Elum and never misses the daily blog. I know this means so much to her, I try to sponsor her birthday every year!”

A sacred weaving

June 7, 2021 by Katelyn

Nothing fulfills my heart more than caring for the chimpanzees. Making their days better in every way we can, whether it’s ensuring their home is clean, they have fresh, healthy and exciting foods to eat, making sure they have interesting and evolving enrichment to keep their intelligent and curious minds active, that they have the best healthcare possible provided by not only qualified professionals, but by people who provide that care from their hearts, who treat the chimpanzees with dignity, acceptance and love for the unique individuals they are. It’s truly incredible to work somewhere where you can say you believe, wholeheartedly, that every single thing that is done, at every level of the organization, is done with each chimpanzee’s well-being as the priority. Always. I can say that, and I’m immeasurably grateful.

And as much as all of that is an amazing gift to be able to provide them, it’s also the tiny, daily moments of care that make my heart really sing. Things like knowing that when Burrito is blowing raspberries at bed-time it’s because he’s asking for his “bedtime ice.” Knowing that Jamie wants her boots and books for the night left for her before you go. Even just knowing that she likes her carrots peeled. It’s knowing that when Willy B sits on his beloved leopard blanket and spurts at you while looking at the TV that he wants his movies turned on, or when he looks at your pocket he wants some screen time with the iPhone. Or when Mave quietly walks away while you’re serving something it’s because she’s going to wait for you upstairs or around the corner where she can enjoy it in peace. It’s knowing to put the giant wolf blanket in the front room nearest the outdoor chute because Honey B loves to nest with it outside most of all. It’s knowing when you hear Foxie blowing Bronx cheers she’s calling your name because she needs something. Maybe a doll, maybe to play, or maybe just to say hi. I could list a thousand and one tiny, magical and mystical moments. A daily sacred weaving, the tapestry of their strong spirits hopefully reinforced with each thread of love and honoring from our hearts to theirs.

Even just being able to provide lunch forages on Young’s Hill because you know it’s the perfect Pacific Northwest chimpanzee (and human) weather and it will bring joy and interest to their day.

Burrito, Annie and Jamie:

Burrito:

Foxie felt her bottom lip was a good place to hold her apple while she continued foraging:

Dear Jo, enjoying her leek from the raceway to Young’s Hill, her patented “dinosaur noises” of delight heard across the sanctuary:

Missy:

Some tiny whole apples were a big hit in the forage:

Annie:

And can you believe these glorious new greenhouses?!! Honey B has been banging on the windows and was telling Chad it’s really fine if he just let her in there! She’s ready!! I don’t blame her – I’d live in there if I could! The new bamboo has been planted and we hold hopes it will survive the chimpanzees. Since Farmer Jody won’t be in these greenhouses, they might have a chance. 😉 This is the view from the upstairs of one of the new playrooms, with the valley and river below:

These two views are from below:

We all cannot WAIT for the three to have access to these amazing spaces and we cannot wait, with all of you, to welcome home Cy, Lucky, Rayne, Gordo, Terry, and Dora! To see what they choose to do with their new lives here, to have the honor of witnessing where and how they choose to bloom.

When Mave, Willy B and Honey B were first given access to the new playrooms I couldn’t get over how much they just blossomed, instantly came alive in new and intriguing ways that we’d not yet seen. It made my heart burst for them. But I can’t say it wasn’t tinged with a bit of sadness as well. Even though they’d seemed perfectly happy with their previous spaces, I also realized that like all chimpanzees in captivity, it was because they had to be. The truth is, it’s heartbreaking when we inevitably have to acknowledge that there are limits on what’s possible for them because of the lives that humans have created for them.

But the opposite of that is also true. Here we are mere days away from celebrating the seven’s 13th anniversary of their arrival to the sanctuary on June 13th (and Negra’s birthday!) and our virtual auction, The Queen’s Brunch. (Please be sure to join us live on Facebook and YouTube!). And all these years later each of the chimpanzees continue to amaze and surprise us with the leaps of curiosity and courage they take. I mean, twelve years in and Negra decides to climb to highest tops of a structure on Young’s Hill for the first time! So you just never know! One of the biggest gifts of true sanctuaries are that they provide each individual chimpanzee the space and time to explore, grow and heal in whatever way they need. As much as possible, to take true agency over their lives. YOU make that possible for them each and every day. Not a single moment of care provided for each of these special individuals would be possible without you. And from our hearts, we truly thank you.

If you’ve made it this far, I’m going to end this evening with this bonus Burrito photo!  Burrito is nuts for this tub lately (see this adorable video that Diana posted on Saturday)! Half the time we catch him just sitting in it, as if he’s sailing the high seas out there. And I forgot to share last week that I heard him playing with it, but when I went to see what he was doing I saw the tub upside down, Burrito nowhere in sight. I called him and out popped his head from UNDER the tub, just like a turtle! I only had an iPhone on me, but couldn’t resist this guy, in his beloved tub of a boat, holding fast to Dora’s friend, Kate:

Goodnight, all! And you don’t have to wait for the celebration on Sunday, June 13th, to start celebrating! Bidding is now open for some pretty wonderful things in our online auction for The Queen’s Brunch! We can’t wait to see you Sunday! We have so much to celebrate together!!

In Memory of Robert Ruggeri

June 6, 2021 by Katelyn

Dear friend of the sanctuary, Rachel Ruggeri, thank you so much for sponsoring today and honoring your father, Robert Ruggeri, and his legacy in such a heartfelt and compassionate way. All of us here are sending you and your family all the good thoughts and hope your hearts are filled with love, joy and comfort, just as you help provide for the chimpanzees and bovines. This is such a beautiful tribute and we’re honored to get to share in Robert’s memory with you today. He sounds like such a special human.

“I want to sponsor this day in honor of my father, Robert Ruggeri, who would have been 85 years old today. Sadly though, my father past away 8 years ago. So while we are no longer able to honor him in person, we think of him in spirit each and every day most especially on his birthday, June 6th. My father was an incredible person who loved life and all living creatures, but had a special place in his heart for animals most especially chimpanzees (primates). My father made the world a better place and in his honor, I want to ensure that the chimpanzees at the sanctuary know a better life…the way they so deserve. Cheers to the memory of Robert Ruggeri!”

In celebration of June birthdays!

June 2, 2021 by Katelyn

A fair amount of our blog posts are in celebration of our chimpanzee and bovine residents’ birthdays, as well as Sponsor a Days from generous humans wishing to celebrate their own special day or the birthday or memory of someone dear to them by sponsoring a day of sanctuary for the chimps and the cattle.

But starting today, we’d like to add something new and honor all of you out there, our amazing supporters, who have a June birthday!

It’s no small thing to us that you choose to follow, share, support and contribute, in a myriad of wonderful and inspiring ways, to Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest and all those who call this special place their home. *YOU* make every day in sanctuary for each chimpanzee and bovine here, and all those to come, possible. Your life makes a difference in their lives. And we’re so grateful to you.

For many years we’ve enjoyed signing and sending birthday cards to those of you who have chosen to share your birth date with us, just as a fun way to say we appreciate you and share images of the beautiful chimpanzees. As we continue to grow we want to make sure we are taking every opportunity to responsibly use (and/or reduce) resources of all kinds to the best of our ability. So we came up with the idea of transitioning to a monthly blog post to celebrate human birthdays. Now we get to celebrate all of you (whether you share your birthday or not) and we get to share even more images of wonderful chimps and bovines!

We also hope this gives us the chance to connect with you all even more, so please feel free to chime in on your, or anyone else’s, birthday month if you feel so inclined, let us know if you’re birthday “twins” with one of the chimpanzees or bovines, or maybe you share a birthday month with your Chimp Pal and/or Bovine Buddy. We’d love to hear from you!

So from all of us here, to all of you who celebrate, and are celebrated, in June, Happy Birthday hoots, moos and hoorays!! May you each celebrate what lifts your heart in your own special way.

June is a pretty big deal around here, so you chose a good month to be born. 😉  For exciting starters, you share a birthday month with sweet (soon to be home), Dora, who was born on June 6th!! Here’s Dora in her current home at the former Wildlife Waystation in California (same former home to Honey B, Willy B and Mave) and we just can’t wait to welcome her and her five friends, Cy, Lucky, Rayne, Terry and Gordo home in just a few weeks!

Next we have the effervescent Honey B herself, who is turning 32 on June 11th!

And as if that’s all not exciting enough, we will celebrate Queen Negra’s honorary 48th birthday on June 13th!

June 13th is also the anniversary of the seven’s arrival to the sanctuary in 2008 AND is this year’s date for our virtual live event, The Queen’s Brunch, a virtual anniversary and birthday celebration and online auction. Insider Tip: We’ll be making a special announcement during the event and we’d love to have you join us Sunday, June 13th at 11:00 AM PST (on Facebook and YouTube). We have so much to celebrate! Not least of all, YOU!

Happy Birthday, Nancy!

June 1, 2021 by Katelyn

Many thanks to Jo Brodahl for sponsoring this day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees and Nancy Duryea! Jo shared this lovely message about today:

“It’s Nancy’s birthday and she loves the chimps, especially Honey B!! She told me how, if she won the lottery, she’d give the money to the Sanctuary so I can’t think of a better birthday gift than sponsoring a day in her name. Thank you for all you do for the humans and bovines while still finding time to take pictures and write a blog, you folks are awesome!”

Happy Birthday, Nancy! May you have the most beautiful of days! Thank you so much for being a Pal to the magical and endearing Ms. Honey B! You and Honey B are June birthday pals, too! Honey B’s birthday is June 11th! 🙂
