Happy (Early) Birthday Wishes, Jamie Chimpanzee!

October 30, 2021 by Katelyn

Tomorrow is Jamieween! The day we celebrate the honorary birthday of the Head Chimp in Charge (HCIC), Jamie. And in light of all the shenanigans and hullabaloo of the day, the wonderful Paulette Wrisley chose to sponsor a day of sanctuary in Jamie’s honor a wee bit early, sending: “Happy early birthday wishes to THE BOSS!”

And that suits us just fine because of course in truth, the spirit behind “Jamieween”, and Jamie herself, is much more than a day or a season, it’s the very heart of everything we strive to do here at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest.

We don’t know Jamie’s exact date of birth, only, according to limited records, that she was born in 1977. Jamie spent her entire childhood being raised by a trainer who used her in entertainment and then sold her into the biomedical research industry at the age of 9, where she remained until coming home to Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest at the age of 30. And now, thirteen amazing “Jamieweens” since Jamie and her six friends arrived to their sanctuary home, Jamie is turning 44! I think every year that passes only solidifies that there couldn’t be a better day on which to celebrate our friend.

One of my favorite Jamie stories of all time is the time she stood at the top of Young’s Hill watching J.B. use the chainsaw to cut up some fallen trees. Jamie loves work boots. She’s also fascinated by power tools. And she loves to run around Young’s Hill with her human friends. Can you see where this is going? Yep! She tried to get J.B. to chase her around the hill with the chainsaw! I cannot express to you just how very “Jamie” that is!

Now I know some of you are wondering how on earth J.B. could have known that’s what she wanted, and as we’ve mentioned before, it just comes with knowing Jamie and communicating with her every day, just like when she gestures for us to put certain boots to go for a walk (here is an older video demonstrating this, but nothing at all has changed with the exception that we now wear PPE at all times in the chimp house). Someone asked the other day if there is ever a time we tell the chimpanzees “no” when they request something. It’s pretty rare unless it’s something unsafe for them (or us), of which this would be a perfect example, haha. Jamie probably wasn’t interested in any of the reasons J.B. declined her crazy wacky insanely dangerous request. But in my mind, because I know Jamie, I can see it clear as day and just how thrilled she would have been. Because, she’s Jamie!

What I admire most about Jamie is that she is unapologetically herself every second of the day and you always know where you stand with her. She can be incredibly sweet and equally terrifying. She’s a delight and a terror. She’s beautiful, silly and joyful, yet always maintains her penchant for the macabre (enter her fascination of looking at books about mummies, bodies, and skeletons, for one). Nothing…not.one.thing…gets past her. She knows all and sees all. She’s a constantly thinking woman who plots and plans and never ceases to amaze us with her intelligence and creativity. In short, Jamie is a force of nature. There’s no doubt in my mind it’s what got her through the life she lived before she came home to Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest.

Jamie is unique. Like no other. We could not have more admiration, respect or love for her. And it’s this very spirit that Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest strives to honor and celebrate in every individual who calls the sanctuary their home. It’s this very spirit which you make possible in all the many and varied forms we’re privileged to share. I don’t think we’ll ever be able to fully express our gratitude to you for that.

Thank you again so much, Paulette, for helping us celebrate the amazing person Jamie is!

Happy Birthday, beloved James! May you spend every second of all your days forward being exactly as you choose, equally dazzling and scaring the wits out of us all in the process.

Happy Birthday, Pam!

October 25, 2021 by Katelyn

Many thanks to Mary, Jessy, Rita and Toni for choosing to sponsor a day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees in honor of Pam Lehnert on her birthday! It is so kind of you to celebrate Pam in this way!

“Happiest of birthdays to our dear friend Pam Lehnert, who has contributed many hours of support to the chimp sanctuary. Mary, Jessy, Rita and Toni.”

Pam is a dear friend and former volunteer of the sanctuary and has helped to make many of our (pre-pandemic) HOOT! Galas the successes they’ve been. She and her husband, Marc, are among the original supporters of the sanctuary and they’ve been, and continue to be, part of making so much possible not only for the original seven chimpanzees, but for the nine chimpanzees who’ve also come to call the sanctuary their home.

Happy Birthday, Pam! Thank you for being part of our chimp family and for bringing so much to so many lives. We hope you have the most beautiful day of celebration!

Musical boxes

October 24, 2021 by Katelyn

A huge storm is blowing into the Pacific Northwest and here at the sanctuary we have a much needed week ahead of rainy and blustery weather. We arrived to darkened skies and all the lights in the chimp house flickering. Perfect spooky Jamieween season weather!

All of the chimpanzees have stayed cozy and warm in their indoor areas today (with the exception of Burrito, who has been relatively undeterred by the stormy weather and making dedicated volunteer caregiver, Lizz, race to and fro around Young’s Hill in the rain and wind).

Beautiful Lucky:

Cy caught up on his reading:

Gordo sat out the afternoon portion of the stormy day from his box once again:

The chimps were very excited to get a visit from Dr.’s Erin (Zamzow) and Jen (Wallace). Terry arrived late and thought he’d missed them so Erin and Jen made sure to come back and see him:

Gordo finally left his box and Rayne immediately pulled it over to sit in for her visit with Jen (L) and Erin (R):

This box was prime realty today! During dinner Dora hopped in the box!

Bonus photos from caregiver Sam!:

Terry, with a mouthful of water (one of which he spat right in my eye this morning!):

Gordo!

In other news, our little bovine family, Honey, Meredith, Betsy and Nutmeg, were moved over to their winter pasture today with quite the hullabaloo, as cattle are wont to do with new pastures. J.B. sent me these stills of a video he took. Meredith (look at her tail!):

Nutmeg!!

And! There are only SEVEN days until Jamieween!!! We caregivers appropriately spent this dark and stormy day sharing spooky stories so now we have to just think of this sweet picture of a wild Nutmeg so that we can sleep tonight!

Happy Birthday, Paulette!

October 22, 2021 by Katelyn

Thanks so much to DeAnna and Paul Estrada for sponsoring a day of sanctuary for their aunt, Paulette Wrisley, on her birthday!

DeAnna shared these thoughts about her special gift: Today is my aunt’s birthday and I am dedicating this day to her, the person who loves me unconditionally. My Aunt Paulette amazes me with her selfless acts of kindness, always smiling, even during the darkest storms. She is daring, beautiful, giving, and I could go on and on, but I hope you get the gist!! She loves the chimpanzees so much and as I dedicate this day to her, I also want the chimpanzees to have something fun or just special on this day in her honor.

How wonderful that we all get the opportunity to join in the celebration of Paulette! As many of you may recognize, Paulette brings a kind and joyful presence to our blog community and she has graciously sponsored many days of sanctuary helping us honor each of the chimpanzees on their birthdays. What a treat to see her honored today for the beauty she brings to life.

Happy Birthday, Paulette! Thank you for all you do to help make a lasting difference in the chimps’ lives. Have a wonderful day!

Happy Birthday, Trish!

October 20, 2021 by Katelyn

Many thanks to Elise Gruber for the beautiful gift of sponsoring a day of celebration in honor of her mother, Trish Swain, on her birthday! Trish shared these lovely words:

“I have followed the blogs and even the archives going back to 2007 when you were preparing for the Cle Elum 7. The blogs are so generous, allowing us to experience your world of dedication, caring, knowledge and fun. They have certainly enriched my life. For my 80th birthday, it’s a great joy to dedicate a day to all of you at CSNW.”

Happy Birthday, Trish! We’re so happy to get to celebrate with you! Thank you for your kind words, your loving heart for the chimpanzees, and all animals, and the difference you make in their lives.

Thank you, Colleen!

October 16, 2021 by Katelyn

Colleen Walford graciously sponsored a day of sanctuary in honor of “Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest for doing such a wonderful job!”

Thank you so much for your kindness, Colleen! Certainly none of what Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest does would be possible without our amazing supporters or the amazing chimpanzees and bovines who call the sanctuary their home.

When thinking of “doing such a wonderful job”, our hearts can’t help but sing at the courage and growth of all the chimpanzees and bovines, but even more so at this time, over nine chimpanzees who have been asked so much of these past many weeks and months; a change of homes, friends and family, and all they knew, and how each one is doing their very best, courageously stepping outside comfort zones and into a new home for some, and both new and renewed relationships and experiences for all.

We so appreciate you, Colleen, and every one of you, who help keep the chimpanzees’ lives and home brimming with new choices, possibilities, hope, and family.

Happy Birthday, Vicky!

October 12, 2021 by Katelyn

Long-time supporter of the sanctuary, Vicky Miller, is celebrating her 67th birthday today and chose to share her special day with the chimpanzees!

Vicky, thank you so much for sponsoring a day of sanctuary for the chimps (and the bovines!). All of us wish you the happiest birthday and hope your day is filled with joy, just as you’ve helped provide for all the special beings who call the sanctuary home.
