Hammock Adventures

February 1, 2025 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

J.B. and Ryan, our part time grounds and maintenance employee, recently hung up a hammock for the chimpanzees of Cy’s group to try out! We wanted to gauge the interest of the chimpanzees in hammocks before purchasing more, as well as be sure the fabric hammocks were sturdy enough for our sometimes destructive friends in the group of 9. Thankfully, so far the hammock has withstood the chimpanzee test. Check out the video to see the new hammock in action!

Rayne and Lucky. Lucky and Rayne. The two Dora Explorers of the group! It’s a delight to see these two dive in to new adventures with little to no hesitation. And Rayne looked oh so comfortable in the hammock! It’s the perfect size. I hope others follow the girls lead soon. Great idea! Big thank you to J.B. and Ryan for always constructing items that improve the chimps day to day!

Did I see Gordito head straight downstairs, and Willy B after him?

I cannot resist a good hammock, but I would be so afraid of being up that high and tumbling out of bed! I think they’ll get into it very quickly since rain seems to have the idea now. Can’t help but think that JoJo would have loved one too

the hammock looks like a great place to read, but little concerned that it is open and up hogh. Would the chimps be safe?

I feel the same way, but if you watch past videos, you will see that someone, probably Lucky or Rayne, has been sleeping on one of those little round platforms. And we have to remember that if they were in the wild, they would be sleeping in trees.
I am not afraid of heights, but every time I see that, I get a little bit of vertigo

I was just gonna come back and say, wait, but in the wild they’re up in tall trees. Linda beat me to it!

I’m sure once they figure out how comfy it is, the hammock will become quite the hot commodity!
