First of all, the HOOT! 2019 event was a great success and so, so much fun! Thanks to everyone who attended and raised their paddles for the chimpanzees!
We were able to share some very exciting news in person at the event. If you are an e-news subscriber, you got this news in your inbox this morning.
Here’s the highlight: three more chimpanzees will be coming to the sanctuary later this summer! Honey B, one of the three, is Missy’s 30-year-old daughter. Honey B was removed from Missy right after she was born in the laboratory, but now they will have a chance to get to know each other as adults.
You can watch the video (above and below) that we shared at the event right before Give a HOOT! where guests raised their paddles to give direct donations to the sanctuary. After watching the video, we raised over $100,000 for Give a HOOT! We’ll need these funds to continue the care of all of the chimpanzees, including Honey B and her friends Willie B and Mave.
If you were not able to attend, but would still like to help, you can make a celebratory donation too. We appreciate it!
We really couldn’t be more excited to be making this announcement. Thank you, blog readers, for following the sanctuary and investing in learning more about the chimpanzees. Your support means so much.

This is such wonderful and exciting news. Not only 3 new chimpanzees but a reunion!!!
Thank you for sharing.<3

I’m so happy for Missy and Honey B! I literally cried with joy! Thank you to all at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest.

Diana — May I assume that Missy and Honey B won’t recognize each other and will need to be introduced just like any 2 chimps who haven’t met each other before?
Diana says
Yes. They spent less than 24 hours together when Honey B was born, from what we can gather from their records.
Amy M says
So sad but I hope she loves running and gymnastics as much as her mom does!
Diana says
One of the first things we learned about her from those who know her is that she is very active!
Marcia says
This is such exciting news! I can’t wait to meet the new members of the family and watch them expand, as they discover they have somehow found themselves in an amazing new home. Will this be the first time Burrito has experienced or lived with another male?
Diana says
We are not sure. There was another male who lived at Buckshire in the same room as the Cle Elum Seven. Sadly, he passed away two years before they came to the sanctuary. We don’t know if he lived in the same cage as Burrito or separately. We do know that Willie B has lived with other males, so we hope that will increase the chances of them being friends :).
Linda Crawford says
Oh, I hope so, too, Diana! I’d seen the video on YouTube this afternoon, but it didn’t note there that Missy’s daughter was one of the adopted chimps! Yay! I noticed Mr. Willie B looked a little long in the tooth, so maybe not likely to challenge Jaime……..But I thought, “now, then, that one hanging on the bars, there……” I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
Diana says
Willie B is actually younger than any of the Cle Elum Seven. He was born in 1990. And he is the one on the left looking at the photo. Honey B is on the right, hanging on the caging. Fingers crossed all around! I just showed Jamie their photos and she was interested. 🙂
Linda says
Oh, how cool! Another thing that will be interesting to see is, if Missy recognizes (though you said it’s doubtful) Honey B, how that will affect, if at all, the BFF dynamic with Annie…….will they form a BFF trio? So many things to look forward to!
Marcia says
Willie B looks like a kindly soul, but with a twinkle in his eye and Honey B looks like a spunky girl, but not with the leadership intensity that is written all over Jamie. I think I could keep you busy year round, with my questions, I have so many of them. One is whether or not you foresee a time when you might be bringing much younger chimps into the group.
Diana says
Hi Marcia! We wouldn’t rule out bringing in younger chimpanzees. Fortunately, there are not that many very young chimpanzees who are in need of a sanctuary home because breeding has been curtailed dramatically. Our view is that chimpanzees don’t belong in captivity, so we are glad that not many have been born the last ten years.

I confess, I had been waiting for my eblast announcing this video. The annual HOOT! videos never, ever disappoint. The news of the three new chimpanzee arrivals from Wildlife Waystation just knocked me over. But when I read about Honey B, “…taken from her mother the day she was born in a laboratory in upstate New York called LEMSIP” and then “Honey B’s mother is Missy – the same Missy who runs at full speed across Young’s Hill and has been enjoying her sanctuary life at CSNW for eleven years.” — I could not do anything but cry. Tears of joy, yes, but bittersweet and overwhelming at the same time.
I believe the natural world has a way of working things out. Mother Nature is so very wise and she is clearly embracing CSNW. I would like to send my love and personally thank every single caregiver, volunteer, supporter, board member, blog/Facebook follower, and mostly, you Diana and J.B. for creating Shangri-La at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest. The Cle Elum Seven, soon to be the Cle Elum Ten (?!!?), and the Beautiful Bovines are living the life they deserve thanks to your determination and generosity of spirit. What a grande difference you have made and continue to make for these beautiful beings. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Right On. Bring them HOME! : )
PS: Google “Honey B the chimp” to see a sweet video of her washing her hands. (Love!)

I couldn’t be happier to learn about this exciting news! I can’t wait to see the three new arrivals meet everyone and hopefully settle into a life of fun and contentment. I only wish that one of Foxie’s babies could come home to her, as she hugs her dolls so tightly. Do you think that could ever happen?
Diana says
Mostly likely, no. Foxie’s living children are at established sanctuaries and live in social groups.
Tobin says
Wow! All that I can say is “Wow!” Oh, I so hope that this all works out for everyone involved.
Jo Lathrop says
Most wonderful and ab fab news!!!!! So happy! Love and hugs to you all…

I cried tears of joy not only about the 3 new retirees but the fact that one of Missy’s daughters were located. Thank you for all the hard work and love you and your staff put into this effort.
