PRT Breakthrough

June 5, 2026 by Sabrina 4 Comments

One of the of the trainings we’ve been working on frequently with the chimps is getting ECG (electrocardiogram) from the chimps while awake using the KardiaMobile. To accomplish this the chimps needs to put one fingers on each of the metal electrodes and their heart rhythm is recorded to your smartphone, you can read about it more in depth here.

Well, one resident had a breakthrough recently, in the beginning of this training Rayne would always try to use her toes rather than her fingers, and later progressed to one toe and one finger, as pictured below:

But Rayne just recently got her first ever ECG reading using two fingers!

Here are her results! This a great start to getting regular readings to help monitor Rayne’s heart health throughout her life:

In other sanctuary happenings, Bruce has become quite the social butterfly around here!

Yay, Raynie! Bruce is the polar opposite of Barn Kitty in the personality department. So nice to see how happy he is there.

What a treat with today’s blog, first we see Rayne’s ECG result which is really up close and personal and pretty spectacular and then we see Bruce charming everyone and very much at home. He is adorable and how could you not fall in love with him? Maybe one day Barn Kitty will return and become pals with Bruce.

Given how finger-like her species’ toes are, Raynie can be excused if it took her awhile to use two fingers to make a cardio graphic recording. Alas, I trust that she was amply rewarded for her choice in digits. Likewise, I hope that Bruce will be positively reinforced to be a stay-around-the-farm cat. Presumably, Honey B’s old pal Luna has made a new friend in the new cat in town.

Great news regarding Rayne’s PRT training! Something tells me she had a good teacher. 😉 We know Rayne has a big caring heart, now we can see how healthy it is.

Bruce has definitely settled in at the sanctuary! I can see he appointed himself to the position of Service Kitty! Bruce seems to be delivering comfort to all the hardworking caregivers, even young Luna! (Anna! Luna is grown up and so beautiful!)
