Hello Friend. Perhaps You’d Like to Share Your Tomatoes?

May 24, 2026 by Diana 11 Comments

I love watching subtle communication between chimpanzees and the social roles on display.

Missy is a socially savvy chimpanzee, and this video shows that. Though Negra is not physically dominant, particularly now that she is less mobile, she remains the Queen, and Missy is keenly aware and respectful of the social rules of her group.

This exchange reminded me of an instance, many years ago, when Missy was eating corn on the cob. Negra reached out her hand and grimaced towards Missy, and Missy calmly put the ear of corn in Negra’s hand.  I think I put photos of it on the blog. I did a quick search and didn’t find the post. I’ve got a pair of brand-new Burrito socks as a prize for the first person who finds the post. It would probably be from 2008 or 2009.

Ah, poor Missy. Alas, the summer is yet still young, and Ive little doubt that the Tomato Fairy will pay her a visit in the days to come.

I also remember Negra reaching for, and being given, a food item. There are a couple of readers who are much faster than I, though, at finding specific vids.

She wauted so patiently and all she got were scraps. Better luck next time, Missy.

I think the Neggie video might be the video from the blog “Sharing” from June 23rd, 2010! Neggie is very persuasive!

That’s the one I was thinking of, Eli! https://chimpsnw.org/2010/06/sharing-2/
I didn’t remember the other clips of sharing that Elizabeth had included. What a great video! You have a choice between orange or blue socks. Size small fits women’s up to size 9 and size large over size 9. I’ll email you to make arrangements to get them to you! For everyone else, we’ll have them for sale soon online in our merchandise shop 🙂

When looking for that one, this Sharing video came up of Missy giving up a bucket of snow to Negra, then Negra sharing some of it with Jody: https://chimpsnw.org/2011/03/sharing-3/

That was very touching and interesting to watch. As much as Missy loves tomatoes it is so cool to see her respect the Queen. Oh the he look in her eyes as they went one by one. Kudos to you Missy – I’m sure you’ll get plenty of tomatoes.

It looked to me that Negra was flaunting the tomatoes in front of Missy’s face….
“What Missy, did you want some tomatoes? You NOT getting any from me girl….”

I loved this video! Talk about self control — well done, Missy! I chuckled at the way Missy cleared the blanket from obstructing her view. She wanted to make sure she kept her eye on that mound of juicy tomatoes! It was cute the way Missy looked so antsy waiting, wishing, hoping she might gain access to a tomato. Negra was well situated to protect her tomato snack. I’m sure Negra needed her right arm out in front of her to balance her weight so she could eat the tomatoes, but, I actually believe she had her arm positioned that way to block any intruder from taking her tomatoes!

And I distinctly recall that video with the ear of corn!! I can see Eli is going to be sporting a pair of new Burrito socks very soon!!
