What’s Happening in the Chimp House Today?

April 19, 2026 by Diana

It was a delightfully “normal” day. If such a thing exists, when caring for sixteen chimpanzees. I hope you enjoy the video of a glimpse into the day!

Here’s that Dancing Queen in the sunshine

Oh, dear, sweet Negra. This showed clearly what you’ve been saying about mobility issues (I can be slow on the uptake) and it’s so sad to see. Sweet of Jamie to attend her.

Spring grass for Neggie! Huzzah! And a new beginning for Georgie.
I knew that Jamie likes to watch you guys clean from a barrel or table in that position, but I never realized she fell asleep in that position:smile:

Jamie. I love her. There she is sleeping, upside down on her favorite block, with goofball in the background entertaining himself with his box. Appears even the Fun Police needs time off.

Thrilled to see Negra outside joining in the forage! Atta girl!! Maybe she’s not moving as well but she seemed so determined. I love Negra, maybe all the more after see this.

The Boys Club appears to be working together nicely. That was the quickest scuffle. George fits in perfectly.

George was living alone in a cramped, dirty cage. All he needed was love and a healthy environment. t

I am both saddened to witness the difficulty to Negra’s ambulatory movements, and yet grateful to see her outside on her hill amidst the spring grass. I keep wondering what is the cause of her ailment: hip dysphasia, arthritis in her posterior extremities, growths on her feet or in her pelvic region. As I speculate, I also consider what treatment options are available to her. I trust that Dr. Zamzow is consulting with other veterinarians who have experience with attending to the needs of elderly primates with impaired mobility.

I think of Neggie often. Indeed, earlier today, I was in a store when I heard “Dancing Queen” being played on the intercom. I much prefer the song and dance which Dusty, Ellen, and Kelsi performed for Her Majesty the other day.

Negra has severe arthritis in her knees. We know that from her previous exams and we’ve been treating her for that for several years. Based on her recent loss of mobility, it’s possible she is also dealing with a spine issue (such as a herniated disc), but that is speculation. In addition to the pain protocol, we are trying other medication and attempting to get her used to the laser. She’s not a chimpanzee who tolerates much from us humans, and we don’t want to risk an anesthetic procedure at this point. So, like Negra, we are taking it day by day and very glad that she is choosing to move around as much as she is. Thank you for caring about her.

Diana, can you ask Dr Erin about the Assissi loop for her opinion? It worked wonders for Li’l Bub (videos on her channel, RIP Bub)

Diana, i’ve seen the cold laser therapy treatment ease some joint pain on zoo primates. I asked my ortho doc tor about it for me knee. He said no, So i had total knee repacement. Negra is obviously not a candidate for that, so at this point it will be just a matter of keeping her comfortable and lettingher guide you through this by showing you how much aches she is willing to work thru. You, Negra and Dr. Erin together will know the way.

Negra is so beautiful. It’s also wonderful to see George with the guys. Jamie must be a sound sleeper with all of that noise Burrito is making in the background lol Thank you for giving them a safe and loving home where they can make their own choices:)

How great to see Negra outside in the sun. Although her movements may be labored, it shows that she is willing to try to move about as long as she can.

Seeing George with lhis new posse under the watchful eye of Cy is delightful.

Glad Neggie got outside just tp get some fresh air! And how very sweet of Jamie to tenderly care for our Queen. Did Jamie continue to care for Negra after the drama? It seemed to me that Neggie didn’t want her to leave.

And Jamie sleeping through Burritos box fun. Jamie must have had a tiring day to sleep thru that!
So glad George is a part of his special group! Boys day out:)

It warms my heart to see Neggie doing her favorite things, even with her mobility issues. Jamie was so attentive, too.
I’m glad to see George has fit in so well! It’s like he’s been at CSNW the whole time!

Mobility issues can be managed, particularly in an individual like Neggie who has the spirit, determination and will to enjoy life
