Snow Snack Season

November 26, 2025 by Kelsi

Yesterday marked the first real snowfall of the year, and for the chimps here at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, that can only mean one thing, it’s officially snow snack season! Each winter, the chimps demand snow delivered to them whether they have access to their outdoor space or not.

Missy, in particular, is a snow fiend and insists on having snow all day long. So, today we filled up buckets with fresh snow and drizzled sugar-free flavoring on top. The whole chimp house seemed excited about the treat, even George! At first, Cy had to show him the ropes a little, but once George gave it a try, he was hooked and seemed to enjoy the snow snack just as much as the others. Snow snacks are just one of the many ways we help brighten their days during the colder months!

George: “What is this.?” Cy: “It’s a snow snack. Don’t eat too fast or you’ll get a brain freeze.” [do chimps get brain freezes?]
Happy Thanksgiving to all at CSNW. There won’t be turkey tomorrow, butI hope everyone has a super sweet potato (my favorite) day.

I seem to remember there was a blog a few years ago with one of the chimps eating lots of snow and then clutching their head. The conclusion was brain freeze! I cant remember who but I think it was Jamies group. Some else might remember better than me

Hi, Kathleen! I don’t remember anyone clutching their head, but I do remember Foxie eating so much she was shivering, so they had to but out the warm tea.

Speaking of my Foxie friend, I notice she’s increasingly sans pélage…:pensive:
What a change! Seeing Honey B with her snow snack reminded me of her venture out into the chute for their first snow, and how she shivered!
George seemed pretty excited about it! And Cy’s food peering didn’t phase him at all at pomegranate time!

Love seeing Jamie’s group enjoying buckets (!!!) of snow! Yummy flavored snow no less. It is always fun to see the various ways the chimps attack their treats. But WTRayne!! Rayne gets the prize! How did she manage to abscond with three buckets? Where were the big guys? Atta way Rayne! And newbie George didn’t appear to take much time figuring out that his bucket full of white crazy stuff might be chillingly cold but definitely worth his time because of the sweet topping he can suck out of his mouthful. Yummmm. Cy and George are so cute together.
