Nature, nurture, and everything in between

August 21, 2025 by Anna

Captive chimpanzees walk the tightrope between their ingrained wild nature and their unusual circumstances where they live a life assembled for them by humans. In sanctuary, we do our best to provide all the options for the chimpanzees that are much deserving of the freedom of choice.

Good to see our Queen out and about!
Nice of the Tiny One to share her dolls!

Even the grass is crunchy! 🙂
I’m already looking forward to Negra in the new spring grass. It’s the most beautiful sight.

Yes, all the options, and then some, for the chimpanzees that are much deserving of the freedom of choice is right. And the freedom to enjoy your crunchy forage in a place of your choosing…right alongside your longtime friend and caregiver. 🙂

Dry grass crackling like Rice Crispies brings to mind the chance of wildfires and snakes. But I know the CSNW primate alarm system will warn of both.

What a great mother Negra and the other chimpwomen would have been…I am grateful that Betsy and Honey were able to raise their children.
