World Chimpanzee Day Forage

July 14, 2025 by J.B.

We celebrated World Chimpanzee Day with a forage that included young coconuts in their husks—a chimp favorite! In this video, we follow Burrito, Foxie, and Jamie as they gather their bounties, attempt to crack them open, and try to keep them from getting stolen. See if you can spot some examples of reaching – what do you think the chimps are saying with their extended arms?

I love young coconut too. What a treat!

Do the chimps wadge with the coconut fiber at all? I reckon it would be great for cleaning teeth.

2:07 “Hey Burrito…..who’s your friend? Who’s your buddy?”
Yay, Foxie!’You kept it! Annie, too!

Thanks for making their day special!

Chimpanzee social politics never ceases to impress me. I did spy Negra at the very beginning extending her arm in all the food prep excitement but it was poor Foxie’s fear grimace that left the biggest impression on me. It would be hard to hide a coconut, not to mention the reality that you must smack it loudly and repetitively to crack it open! I found myself fear grimacing in mutual support with Foxie as Jamie was approaching. But Jamie was on straw patrol.

Jamie’s amazing. Of course she would create a straw tool for her coconut! I think you should share this video with Jane Goodall. After all, it was her observation of David Greybeard using a tool that catapulted everything. I have this feeling Jane would love the sheer brilliance that is Jamie.

As always, all of us who love the chimpanzees and seek their survival and flourishing owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Goodall and the journey which she undertook 65 years ago today into the forest at Gombe.

The cacophony of coconut anticipation was awesome. After Foxie’s fear grimace i was fearful Jamie would hear the. coconut cracking if she didnt see it when she walked by.
Was that a reach by Negra when she lightly touched Burrito’s back to get some of his coconut?

It’s a bit difficult to see but both Negra and Missy reach towards Burrito from the catwalk and fire hose after he sees the coconuts being prepared and gets excited.

So much fun to watch! Did George get a coconut as well?
