The weather has been beautiful lately and the chimps have been taking full advantage of this false spring before the inevitable second winter strikes back. Enjoy a few scenes from The Bray and Young’s Hill from the past couple of days.
I also want to share with you that yesterday, Honey B took what we hope will be her last trip to the clinic for a while. Here’s more on that from Dr. Erin:
Yesterday, Honey B had her 3rd clinic trip to manage a bite wound on her left hand. She’s had 2 regional limb perfusions to concentrate antibiotics, including deep flushing of the infected wound. Despite twice daily laser treatments, x-rays, and antibiotics, the swelling and drainage have persisted. A team of medical professionals, including Dr. Jeffrey Friedrich, a board certified hand surgeon, and surgery residents Dr. Thais Calderon and Dr. Emma Dwyer, performed a deeper exploratory surgery, which, unfortunately, resulted in the amputation of the affected finger to prevent arthritis and chronic pain. As sad as we are that we couldn’t defeat the bone infection in Honey B’s finger, we are looking forward to her being more comfortable and regaining better use of her hand. We’re grateful for the expertise of Dan Low MD (chimp anesthesiologist extraordinaire) who introduced us to Dr. Friedrich, CRNA Kate Uselman (anesthesia), Dr. Rachelle Chavez, DC, OB/GYN, and sonographer Huong Johnston who performed ultrasound and a complete pelvic exam. Honey B recovered well and was awake and hungry by dinnertime. Even though she was ready to join a brief fray yesterday afternoon, she will need to be isolated for a few days to monitor her healing. A huge thank you goes out to the entire medical team for their care and expertise!
And a huge thank you to Dr. Erin, too!

And Honey B the next day, ready to explore and rejoin her friends (but not until the doc gives the OK):
Oh, my dear Honey Beans…
Sometimes, it just isn’t easy being an intelligent, athletic, and mischievous pan Troglodyte. At least the best part of you remains with you and your cohorts in cahoots.
I wish you a full and timely recovery.
Thank you to that HUGE team of medical experts and staff! (I think you’re gonna need a bigger clinic).
Tough as nails, Honey B! Good to see her going outside alone!
On the video–I already commented on the beautiful shot of the river flowing past Rayne on the tower! That needs to be in a calendar!
JB, does this put an end to the re-introductions?
This injury doesn’t put an end to the reintroduction (chimps will be chimps) but overall the dynamics aren’t what we had hoped so we will be evaluating our options over the coming weeks.
Thanks for answering. That’s disheartening, JB.
Fingers crossed you can find a solution. Did Gordo and Willy B continue with the tense behavior?
Oh, and it looks like The Neighbors have Jamie patrolling counter-clockwise again!
Thank you to all who extended excellent care of Honey B in her surgery. Chimps have a remarkable resilience. While she may have been knocked down by this, I Iknow she’ll be back up again. Nothing’s gonna stop her for long. Rest well, Honey B.
Well, when the going gets tough the team gather round all hands on deck. Poor Honey B lost her injured finger but it was heartening to know she was ready for her meal at the end if her surgery ordeal. Thanks to Dr Erin and the surgicsl team/specialists it’s reassuring know she was in good hands. As Tobin so aptly put it the best part of Honey B remains and nothing can quench her fighting spirit.Loved the early Spring shots of the Bray and of course Foxie with her beloved doll enjoying her outdoor adventure. Thanks for the update, J.B. and for being there for them all.
I’m so thankful for all the resources available to you, and for your willingness to use them so these friends of ours can have the best, healthiest, happiest life! Nothing will keep Honey B down, thankfully!
I’m sorry to hear Honey B is still having problems from her injury. Poor girl. Thank you Dr. Erin! What would these chimps do without you. And a big thank you to everyone who took part in HB’s clinic. So grateful for your expertise and time. And thank you, J.B. and everyone at CSNW, there is nothing you miss when it comes to giving those in your care the very best. Tell Ms. Honey B we are all wishing her well.
Beautiful video today. Beautiful, peaceful days with everyone itching for spring…. Hopefully not the calm before the next winter storm!
I loved this video, everything seemed very tranquil. I’m also so sorry my BFF, Honey B, lost her finger. I am confident she will have no problem finding some kind of trouble to get into with the remaining 4 on that hand.
Thank you for the professional and caring health team’s intervention! :bouquet:Speedy recovery, Honey B!:green_heart:
Nancy. you know your Bff will use her healing time to plot her next heist.
Poor Honey B. I love and respect her scrappy nature, but I hate seeing her banged up. I’m sad she had to lose the finger, but I’m glad she’s back on the mend and I doubt she’ll miss it! I know when she lost her toe it was mentioned that she was showing everyone her missing toe. Has she done that with her finger?
Also, kind of blows my mind how much Raynie looks like her half-sister Tatu in that thumbnail! Two gorgeous and smart ladies!
Love seeing Jamie and her gang on patrol, too!
Yes, the first thing she did yesterday morning was show me her hand – not our of concern but more like “OK, let me groom you hand, can you open the door to the clinic so I can watch the staff prep meds? What else…oh, hey look – my finger is gone. Weird. Anyway, let me see your elbow…”
So…unfazed. :sweat_smile::thumbsup:
I didn’t expect anything else from her! That girl is chaotic!
Wishing Honey B a speedy recovery! Hoping also that she adapts well to the loss of a finger.
