Nutmeg will always be remembered for his (usually) gentle and innocent nature. I hope you enjoy today’s remembrance video in advance of his birthday.
If you’ve been with us for some time, you may recall (or allow me to remind you) of the blog post Boyish Charm I wrote about the endearing qualities that Nutmeg seemed to share with Burrito as well as our big-headed-and-hearted dog Wilson, who has also since passed away.
I still don’t know what precisely it is about their “enchanting youthful demeanor” that fills me with such love, but I am eternally grateful for having experienced Nutmeg’s presence and big doughy personality, and to have been able to be with him on his last day last spring.
I hope you will eat an apple for Nutmeg tomorrow.
Dear, beautiful big boy, Nutmeg with the best hairstyle anywhere. I always loved the photos of him next to the girls when I could really appreciate just how big he was, but so sweet and gentle. I’ve got my apples ready!
Thank you for remembering dear Nutmeg on the tenth anniversary of his birth tomorrow. Thank you for bringing him, his mother, and Honey and her daughter to live in peace at the Sanctuary. I will raise an apple in his honor and memory tomorrow.
Nutmeg may just be one of the most magnificently handsome creatures I have ever seen. How fortunate you were to know him, to be able to share time with him, and to care for him.
Happy birthday dear Nutmeg. I eat an apple just about every day, but now when I do so I’ll think of you. And I will certainly eat one tomorrow and smile, thinking of past photos of you and your mom and the gals.
PS : I think Negra would be very pleased to slurp up some homemade applesauce tomorrow in Nutmeg’s memory.

Thankyou, Diana, for such an endearing post and beautiful photos of sweet Nutmeg. Bittersweet for you all at the sanctuary but a consolation that you shared Nutmeg’s last day with him and that he passed surrounded by his family and their love. I have just eaten my apple and have sent a prayer up. Nutmeg, you are a star and will never be forgotten :heart:
Nutmeg was such a gorgeous steer. It’s so rare that males from the dairy industry live long enough to reach full size. I take comfort that he got to live his life out in sanctuary, where he was valued as an individual and as a precious being.
You will all meet again!
Sweet boy.
Neggie was getting every drop! Did it have cinnamon in it?
Apples up, everybody!
It did have cinnamon in it!
:yum:
What a beautiful tribute to sweet Nutmeg. So happy he was able to experience sanctuary and even a lovely serenade! Thank you for all that you do.
Sweet Boy Nutmeg, the music lover.
He got to live his life! That alone is amazing, in this world that thinks of him as food.
Thank you for seeing him for the individual that he was.:revolving_hearts:
I am, quite, impressed that you would remember Nutmeg’s birthday, and, devote a blog to his memory. As a vegan, I have a, particular, attactiuon to cattle, and, their sentience, including their, liquid, big, brown, eyes. Not eating them is no sacrifice, at all.
Thank you for a, meaningful, look back.
So loved this gentle giant. The cattle have always held a special place in my heart.
