Art, re-imagined

December 5, 2024 by Anna

To continue our Comfort and Joy celebrations, today  we gave the chimpanzees 2 different pieces of artwork that have been reformatted into enrichment items! First off, we gave Negra’s group a new cozy blanket with the famous Negra in the Sun painting printed on it.

I carefully hung it on the railings next to Negra’s nest in anticipation of her snuggling up in it:

Even the best laid plans go awry. After the chimpanzees entered the playroom, Burrito playfully poked the blanket until it fell down over a firehose below. Here’s Jamie foraging for cabbage next to it. You can still see the magnificent artwork that Margaret Parkinson originally painted!

During lunch, Negra did end up pulling her blanket over and using it as a seat cushion:

On the other side of the building we handed out this fantastic silky Lucky scarf (original artwork by Thyra Rutter from Arte for Elephants):

Cy commandeered the scarf for a game of tug-o-war!

Thanks go to our amazing artists Margaret and Thyra, as well as Heather S and Heather H, who purchased the items so the chimpanzees could enjoy them!

Love seeing such beautiful artwork of the chimps! Perhaps the blanket will end up in Neggie’s nighttime nest? I’d love to see sweet Lucky accessorize with her scarf, too!
Also, I don’t know if everyone is aware yet, but I’m sure a lot of us have been concerned about a young chimpanzee named Limbani for a while now. He’s now at Save the Chimps, which is amazing news! With this and the news about the Alamagordo chimps, there’s been some great progress for chimps in the US.

I would love to see Maggie wrapped up in that as a nest!

Oh my god, thank you for the news about Limbani! I had no idea that that was in the works! I hope he gave them a little what for on his way out!
      Now for MBS!

And the joy keeps coming our way!! There is no doubt about it, that’s a blanket fit for a Queen! Negra knows comfort. Choosing meal time over the warm coziness of a blanket nest, Negra repurposes her special gift as a seat cushion. This made me smile.

And Cy appears to be having loads of fun with his new gift. Maybe it’s extra special for him because it features his sister, lovely Lucky.

That is great news about Limbani. I hope that in time that he will enjoy the friendship of Andrea and Noah.

And, I want to commend both Margaret for her art and Thyra for her arte. Her finished products are beautiful; alas, your respective artist’s models are also masterpieces.
