Five years ago to the day CSNW grew by three and welcomed home Honey B, Willy B, and Mave. After beginning their lives in biomedical research and then living at Wildlife Waystation, a wild animal shelter outside of Los Angeles that closed its doors after more than 40 years, they arrived here on August 18, 2019.
A lot has happened in five years- their group grew by 6 in their integration with Cy’s group and they gained access to and gained confidence exploring their 2-acre outdoor enclosure (The Bray). These are just two examples out of many. Their worlds have grown quite a lot since arriving here and ours have, too. Every day with them is exciting and we are so glad to know, and adore, them!
Check out today’s video to see how we celebrated (hint: pasta!).
But first! Thanks to those of you who filled out the survey from Diana’s blog post about the series Chimp Crazy. The first episode airs this evening (August 18th) on HBO and streams on Max at 10 p.m. PT.
The North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance (NAPSA) and Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest (CSNW), along with a special guest, will be hosting a discussion of the first episode. Join us this Tuesday, August 20 via Zoom at 6:00 PM PST/9:00 PM EST to explore Episode 1: Monkey Love. We will be discussing the contents of the episode as well as some history around the use of primates in entertainment and the pet trade, the legality of owning primates as pets, and the Captive Primate Safety Act. Register to join this discussion!
We understand that there may be scenes in the series that could be difficult for primate welfare advocates to watch. Our goal is to provide a space where people can openly share their thoughts and learn more about how they can help these remarkable primates.

Wow, a yummy party. I loved those Cy hugs at the start. What a fantastic five-year feast on favorite forage foods. Thanks, Grace, for the link to Tuesday evening’s Chimp Crazy discussion
Oh my goodness, celebrations galorious and I loved seeing Cy and Honey B hug each other in delightful anticipation. Not only did you give Mave, Honey B and Willy B a second chance of living the good life at CSNW but it also enriched the lives of everyone as they forged new friendships. Thank you for everything and for giving these amazing and intelligent chimpanzees their rightplace in the sun.:heart::sparkling_heart:
May I also just add that while Mave, Willy B and Honey B live the good life at CSNW- the life they deserved- I truly believe that the WWS gave them love, shelter and a place to call home for as long as they could before its closure. I also know that the WWS caregivers were heartbroken in saying “goodbye” to their beloved chimpanzees.
Hear, hear!
Having been a volunteer who was allowed to interact with the chimps at Wildlife Waystation, I love seeing that they are so well taken care of now and seem to be so happy. Thank you for taking such good care of them. It makes their departure
Having been a volunteer at Wildlife Waystation who was allowed to interact with the chimps, seeing them so happy now, makes their departure a bit less painful!! Thank you so much for your love and attention for them!!! If they had to leave, your sanctuary is the best place they could have gone!
Thank you for helping them down that leg of their road. If you ever want to share stories,I for one am all ears, and I’m sure there are others!
(such as how did you discover that Beezus likes coffee!?)
That chorus of food barks is an Ode to Joy. I am so glad that Willy B, Maeve, and Honey Beans moved to CSNW.
Truly and Ode to Joy:hugging:
Yes, I second the last comment in the video! Honey B, Mave, Willy B, we love you! Happy Anniversary!
Does it get any better than pasta boats?! I love how everyone enjoys their pasta. Dear Negra had her sauce all over her bottom lip, and it gave me such a giggle. Same for Jamie’s excited food squeaks.
Thanks for giving us a front row seat to the celebration!
OMG! my fsvorite video of all time! the smacking, the crunching, the grunting, the pure joy for that food. Its almost like they looked up and said “thank you” when handed another pasta bowl. Happiness unparalleled. ?
Can it really be five years? It’s gone by in a flash. What a wonderful video…..happy hugs, fantastic food grunts and squeaks, and everyone so thrilled with their party lunch. Cheeky Honey B with all that loot though……ah well, it was her party after all! It must be so heartwarming for all you caregivers to know that you’ve made them so happy and I’ve no doubt that they gave you a bit of peace and quiet while they had a nap to sleep it all off!
Could not watch this video without smiling from ear to ear. The Chimps are so full of joy with this special celebration in their honor. Thank you for the love and care that you give to them all everyday.
What a wonderful party to celebrate 5 years of the Californians! I know it can’t have been easy for all of the caregivers and volunteers at the Waystation to watch them go. I know they were deeply loved and I am so thankful to know that so many people from the Waystation are still following their stories!
And the forage! Geez, Beezie was chomping at the bit! That girl sure loves her pasta! Mave got some, at least. I hope Willy B did, too!
Also love seeing Jamie’s group digging in! Those grunts and growls and Bubba’s food squeaks are just a symphony! Also Neggie with pasta sauce on her lips! I think she loves carbs as much as Honey B!
I had to watch the Cy/Honey B food celebration hug many times over, and her snaffling all the pasta…pure joy to see their happiness.
Happy 5th Anniversary to you, chimps, ex- and present-day caretakers and friends! This footage goes immediately among the “Best of….” collection! What a lovely food serenade!:spaghetti::corn::ok_hand::notes:
