Peanut Butter Magazines

April 11, 2024 by Anna

One of the most popular types of enrichment for the chimps also happens to be one of the easiest food “puzzles” to make. All it takes is a magazine and a tablespoon of peanut butter spread randomly over its pages to keep the chimps busy for a significant amount of time. The chimpanzees enjoy discovering their treats as they carefully examine each page, front and back!  They usually also end up swapping magazines to make sure their friends didn’t miss any secret peanut butter. This afternoon I snapped some photos as Cy’s group investigated their enrichment.

Dora in the chute:

Gordo:

Rayne:

Cy in particular enjoys the gift of peanut butter magazines because it really expands his collection of browsing material:

Bonus! Negra in snuggle mode this morning:

Wow ….before you know it you will be Swapping out Blankets for Bed Sheets! Should be interesting this year…. I understand the 13-year and the 17 year Cicadas are coming out together……could be Trillions :grimacing: rearing their Red Eyed Heads. I guess Neggie will be in Terminator Mode :grin:YUMMY…Crunchy, Juicy and Full of Protein

Who doesn’t love peanut butter! I have toast with peanut butter every morning. The pictures are great, I think they look so cute just sitting perusing their magazines.

Sounds good, Nancy. Just don’t toast any magazine pages if you run out of bread.

I oncr semt my niece, wjp has the amazing and enviable (for me, anyway) ability to sleep 9 hours or more at a stretch, a pic of Negra in the morning, saying : “I think Negra is your spirit animal”, and she agreed. This post makes me think I could remind her.
    Thanks, Anna.
(PS, it’s also the time of year when I envy you a bit….bc you get to write “chimp house manager” on your tax forms. I always wonder what reaction that would get at the IRS )

Hi Anna, I’ve always wanted to ask if the chimps get peanut butter stuck on the roof of their mouth like people do (and dogs too)?! 🙂 I could see where the magazines could keep the gang busy forever.

That second photo of Gordo is frame worthy. He’s so sweet. And Negra doesn’t look like she was feeling too Springy this morning, but she sure looks snug as a bug.

What a hoot and a brilliant enrichment worthy idea!.May I ask what happens to the magazines after the mega peanut butter forage,? Are they rereadable or do they get trashed,? I also loved Negra’s photo of her snuggling in her blanket. Very cosy. Thanks for sharing.
