National Burrito Day!

April 4, 2024 by Anna

The other day I wore one of several of my CSNW apparel items out in public. This time, a cozy grey sweater with Burrito’s face and name adorning the front. A passerby asked me very logically (in retrospect), “why does your sweater say ‘Burrito’ on it?” It took me a second to answer… In my head I was thinking, of course it says “Burrito” because that is Burrito Chimpanzee, isn’t it obvious? To that innocent bystander, a burrito is more simply a tortilla stuffed with a variety of filling and seems odd to connect to a chimpanzee face. Which I suppose it is.

Burrito was actually given the name Raj when he was born in the laboratory but it was later changed. Somewhere along the way, after all these years of knowing him, his name and face are fully fused in my mind and I literally never think about the food when I talk about him. I also can’t imagine calling him by a different name (apart from his long list of nicknames of course).

Today just so happens to be National Burrito Day. The day might technically have been created to appreciate the food, but I choose to celebrate my goofy chimpanzee friend instead. Here’s to you Mr. B!

Hi Anna, your story totally cracked me up! (I was also thinking I want one of those cozy grey sweaters with Burrito’s face on it! Seriously. I do!) I can’t imagine Burrito growing up as a “Raji”, he is such a Burrito! Thanks for all these photos. Brought smiles to my day.

    Isn’t everyday Burrito Day?!

What a great way to celebrate National Burrito Day but with the King himself? Thanks for the new photos, love to see that guy!

A Burrito by any other name would be just as endearing. Still, given his enthusiasm for fine dining et haute cuisine, I think that the name of Burrito suits the Fabulous Mr. B to a T.

I’ve often remarked upon the resemblances between Burrito and several of my matrilineal kinfolk. As I have researched their genealogy, it seems that they were restricted to recycling the same three to four first names from generation to generation. As such, I am quite glad that my Cousin Burrito received his unique first name: to my knowledge, there isn’t a “National William Day” or a “National James Day”, but there is a National Burrito Day.

Now — per the blog post from 4.16.2021 — if Burrito can ony refrain from taunting the Weight Scale Operator…

I always think of him when I hear it, as well, Anna! And imagine this year, when I had a student who prefers the nickname “Bubba”…I couldn’t resist, I had to tell them why it made me smile! Like Kathleen, I’d wear one of those sweaters!
“Raj”…..reminds me of one of those roadside zoos, the “pretty” one, where the boss likes everyone to change their names to an Indian name…
I remember one year you made a video of Burrito eating a burrito! I think they’d quite like a bean burrito…. do they ever eat beans?

There’s only one way to Find Out:grin:Load those Beans on… and throw some fried onions on for good measure

As much as I like the goofy photos of Burrito, the photo on the lookout pole is amazing.
He looks as I would think he might if he he lived in the wild, alert, strong, intimidating and dangerous.
I wouldnt want to come across him on a jungle walk.

Happy national Burrito day! Of course Bubba needs a national holiday dedicated to celebrating him! Somehow the name Burrito is fitting for such a silly and goofy guy.

i love burritos, any kind — queso, frijoles, chile relleno. If you can find a tortilla big enough to wrap up Chimp Burrito, make my order to go. Salsa and chips on the side, please.

That is a sweet thought Gaynell, Burrito in a tortilla to go . He is simply adorable.

There ARE tortilla blankets on Amazon!
Darn too bad I didn’t think of that before National burrito day!

I know they have/had at least one because Honey B was nesting with it before! Still, I’d love to see Bubbie nesting with a tortilla blanket.

You beat me to it. But Bubba and Foxie don’t really nest.

Oh boy, I thought we were always celebrating our Burrito on National Burrito Day. It never entered my mind that there was an actual day celebrating burritos. I won’t tell anyone if you won’t. :person_facepalming:
