Special Delivery

December 17, 2023 by Amanda Hathaway

The video above shows the chimpanzees enjoying their latest donated enrichment item, the banana duck! Thanks so much to the anonymous donor who won the item in the Comfort & Joy online auction!

Special delivery!

What’s more fun than a plain old cardboard box? Some of the chimpanzees here really prefer to sit inside a box and we all think it’s the cutest thing. Most often, I see Rayne and Gordo choosing boxes to sit in, but sometimes the other chimps will hop in too.

Big Gordo, small box

Rayne repurposing Gordo’s box

Burrito. Technically inside the box

Mave is more comfortable in a spacious box

Hey, did you save the huge appliance boxes? That would make their eyes pop!

Mave looks as if she’s in a boat. She just needs an oar!

Banana Duck? Never heard of him!
Hope he and the fun he brings are not short-lived!

LOVE the photo of Mave..,. and all the others! Do you think the chimps miss seeing your mouths? They use their mouths to express emotion so much that I would think it is a missing piece of your “puzzle” … I understand why but thought I’d ask if you get any sense that it is odd to them?

Well, Banana Duck looks good for laughs, pokes, and no doubt a lot of comfortable resting upon. I loved that Annie joined in to check it out. Let’s face it, we can always count on Burrito to stir up some fun with a stuffed, squishy toy! But not sure I’ve ever seen Annie interacting with one. (Oh those beautiful long fingers of hers. Linda, I know you were thinking the same thing!)

And I am bursting over the Special Delivery photos. A fabulous diversity in styles of box sitting! Burrito steals the show! Your comment that he was “technically in the box” killed me.

Just noticed that Gordo’s box reads “Medium Sweet Potatoes”. I think he’s more of a Grande!! In size and in sweetness. 😀

A plain, old cardboard box. If only we could convince children it’s a great gift from Santa Clause. What a cost savings in Christmas shopping. And, it can be recycled because we know how quickly children tire of new expensive toys.

Couldn’t agree more. In my chilhood – good old socialist shop-shortages era – we were happy to use our creativity and had fun with the same simple objects (cardboard boxes and blankets) the chimps have. We apes are the same in this regard, too. Think outside the box, get into the box!

Burrito and Annie are so cute playing with banana duck! Meanwhile, Foxie is sat wondering what the big deal with stuffed animals is. Dolls are obviously much mure fun.
Cy’s group must have some feline influence, there very much seems to be an “if it fits, I sits” attitude with regard to boxes. Gordo and Rayne in particular.
