My Favorite Subject

December 11, 2023 by J.B.

On busy days, we often look through the photos on our phones to see if we can piece together a blog post worth sharing. As I was doing this today, it became apparent that I have a fondness for a certain subject.

The photos are all slight variations on the same theme: Negra, nesting atop the greenhouse climbing structure under a mountain of blankets. Throughout the spring, summer, and fall, when I arrive for work and walk through the chimp house to say good morning, this is where I know I will find her. And it seems I am compelled to snap a photo each time. How could I resist?

No doubt, J.B. is one of Her Majesty’s favorite royal subjects as well. One surmises as much even as a winter’s morning confronts the Queen with a perennial dilemma:. To stay in her warm nest, or get up for breakfast.

Her Majesty is certainly looking regal in her “robes” and deserves every nest she can have! Love this sweet lady!

Well this is one subject near and dear to my heart. Negra! Negra living her life exactly as she likes it. Warm. Cozy. Snug. Safe. I’d like to make a book of your morning photos. No words necessary.

Like my love for Jamie, I love Negra so much it hurts.

Thank you for giving her this wonderful life.

Considering that I’d buy a 365-day calendar with 365 different photos of Negra in her bed, I get it. Absolutely. ?

I think part of the reason you look for her every day is to start your day right, with a sweet Neggie smile. Am I right, JB?
Looks like everyone’s fav, the wolf blanket, has a red counterpart now!

I love it, the same position in every picture. I wonder if she changes positions at all during the night. I have a pillow case with her picture on it on my bed and it’s almost like sleeping next to her, I would love to give her a big hug…she is so cute.

Sweet Negra, I could look at those pic’s all day.
I guess we all have our fav sleep position, Including the Queen ! :revolving_hearts:

What a perfect start to every day, and she changes her blankets so you can try to guess on your way in which ones will it be today? I’m so happy that she’s living the life she deserves…..sleep as long as you want to, eat yummy stuff and play with Burrito who tones his antics down especially for an old but regal lady. Do the others give her time and space in the mealtime queues or can she still hold her own in making sure she doesn’t miss anything?

    • J.B. says

      December 12, 2023 at 6:45 am

Actually, Negra is the most dominant during mealtimes and she takes anything she wants! Surpringly, given her somewhat more ample figure, she is quite picky and eats about half of what the others eat. This may be due to the fact that, along with a slower metabolism, her preferred activities are less calorically demanding than what the others engage in.

Ive often wondered, JB, but having a slow one myself, I get it. less her, all of those years without space to move. ..I’m glad the others defer to the “auntie”. JB, do you think that that defernce to elders is inherent to all chi.ps, or is this group apecial?

        • Linda C says

          December 12, 2023 at 7:51 am

that was “bless her”. on phone

        • J.B. says

          December 13, 2023 at 6:44 am

Some amount of deference to the status of elderly chimps is not uncommon, but remember that Annie is only one year younger than Negra and she is at the very bottom of the hierarchy. Negra’s status probably has more to do with her forceful personality.

Interesti ng! I wouldn’t have described her as “forceful” from what I’ve seen in the videos! You have to bethere… what happens if someone defies sweet old Neggie? Thanks, JB

            December 13, 2023 at 3:31 pm

If someone defies Neggie, they get a) screamed at, b) chased, 3) wood chips thrown at them, or d) all of the above.

Ha! Ha! Now I can picture her making sure she gets what she wants! what a lady…..thanks JB, you’ve made my day.
