I got it into my head today to take photos of EVERYONE for the blog. I’m still not sure that was a good idea, but it turned out to be fun walking around and seeing what every single individual was up to at various points during the day.
The stand-out revelation from this experience was that Negra was the most active of the whole bunch (well, besides Burrito of course). So, I won’t bury that lead and will share the photos I got of her first:
I probably could just end the blog post there, because it’s a little tale unto itself, but I was already hip-and-brain-deep in this idea of getting photos of everyone, so here we go…
Annie with her fab hair:
Burrito, who invited multiple people to run up the hill with him today:
Foxie contemplating a stem of something:
Jamie, contemplating poking the camera:
Missy contemplating joining Burrito outside:
Missy very up-close in the loft (I had to get a tall ladder for this one):
Photos on the other side of the building were challenging, but I persevered.
I had the most challenge with Cy because he was either in an awkward high-up perch or sandwiched between his adoring chimp fans:
I did finally get this photo of him grooming Willy B. Even when doors are open between rooms, the chimps will choose to groom through the mesh. I don’t know why they do it, but I always find it charming:
Adorable Dora:
Honey B, shown here in the Chute, followed me around in my photographing journey:
Gordo was another tough chap to photograph today. This is a favorite spot of his in the Lupine Playroom. He can see a lot of other spaces in this corner (did you know there was a study that showed chimpanzees and gorillas in captive settings like corners?):
Pensive-looking Lucky in the Marmot Mountain Playroom:
although most of the time she was this close to the camera:
Mave taking a break from grooming on the catwalk of the Marmot Mountain Playroom:
Rayne doing some serious lounging in the warm Riverview Greenhouse:
Terry being perfectly Terry, with a mouthful of a paper wadge and water:
Not wanting to ignore the other important members of the family, I asked J.B. to take some candids of the bovines:
Betsy in motion:
Meredith in between bites of hay:
Nutmeg in all his glory (did you know that the cattle add extra hair for winter? They are delightfully furry right now):
J.B. also snapped this photo of some deer he and Jake passed on their way down from the upper pasture:
I hope you enjoyed our efforts today to bring everyone to you!
I think they groom each other through the mesh because that’s how they do it with their caregivers.
Maybe! When doing introductions, we start with the doors closed and see if they come together at the mesh, so maybe they are going back to that first stage when they choose to have mesh between them .
GREAT JOB !
You work so hard, I hope this added some fun for you, It did for me :revolving_hearts:
I loved all of these photos, but the closeup shot of Missy is stunning.
Thank you, Diana, for today’s photographs. I have an old-school pen pal (we exchange our correspondence through the U.S. Mail); every month I send her a letter full if photographs from the Sanctuary. Not only that, but I place photographs of people like Burritoers. on the exterior of the envelopes. Since I invariably write about the people who live at the Sanctuary, photographs of Neggie, Betsy, Terry, et al contribute to the letters. If nothing else, I hope that my envelopes arouse the curiosity of the post office which handles my letters to my pen pal.
Tobin, I’ve often wondered if my packages addressed to “Jamie Chimpanzee”, etc have surprised anyone at USPS or UPS outside of WA state (pretty sure their delivery driver is used to it by now)
I feel proud when I address a letter to the CSNW to “____ Chimpanzee” c/o CSNW P.O.B. 952, etc.
I’m sure the postal employees enjoy your uniquely decorated letters! I personally love picking up mail addressed to individual chimpanzees. I once received a piece of junk mail (a credit card application, I believe) that was confusingly addressed to Diana Chimpanzee.
:rofl::rofl:
well, compare JBs credit report to Cy’s. Do whatcha gotta
do, girl…
I loved all of these photos, but the closeup shot of Missy is stunning.
Very well done Diana…..this is definitely a keeper! Such endearing photos of everyone. Firstly, the surprising Negra, who would have thought she would take the prize for being most active? I must get the name of Annie’s hairdresser! Sweet little Dora….looking as though butter wouldn’t melt etc. They’re all so photogenic and beautiful…..my computer is FULL of them, because I can’t resist. And finally, does Nutmeg really need extra hair to make him look bigger? The bovines are gorgeous too…..even though the majority of their photos are taken with full mouths! These were all a real treat…..thank you so much, your hard work is very much appreciated.
What a brilliant and brave undertaking, Diana. Climbing ladders! And you succeeded no less! Nice. I really appreciate your efforts. While capturing everyone, even the winter clad bovines, in a single day must have set a sanctuary record, the real award truly does go to capturing dear Negra (in action!!) while she was obviously preparing and filling in for Burrito allowing him take a break from spying on the neighbors so he could instead run a caregiver ragged instead. Thank goodness this event did not unnoticed! Negra looks so small lifting her precious head up to peer out the window. It begs me to ask, does she do this often?! Eeesh. I just love Negra so.
Well, the other side of the house had the tv. She has to settle for whatever “stories” shecan get on the only channel left!
Diana, thank you for taking the time to create a photo of each resident at CSNW. i know barn kitty was secretly watching from somewhere. I think studies on humans, not necessarily captive, show that we prefer to keep our backs to the wall for safety. We can see what’s in front of us but not what might be coming up behind. I love all the chimps, but those bovine faces melt my heart.
My favorite Spanish prof in college
must have been doing some studies of his own, bc he pointed out to me one day that I always sat with my back to a wall or a window,.like Gordo. He wasn’t wrong. And most of my friends know that, given the choice, I’ll take the seat at the table tgat faces the door. I think chimps on the wild don’t do it bc they don’t have rooms and corners!
Great photo-sweep, Diana, including the bonus deer!? I tried to imagine favoring a corner hangout spot, but all I could come up with was to wonder if that preference is related to cats preferring to sit inside a box, or a chalk outline if a box isn’t available. Yeah, that’s probably not a thing. Sure wish I could ask either species what’s up.
I t IS a thing! During the pandemic, I saw either a video or a meme of cats, several of them, sitting in the circles drawn on the sidewalk outside of a restaurant to indicate to patrons the 6ft spacing. One cat per circle!
Great photos of the chimpanzees and the closeups that J.B. took of the four bovine were wonderful, the deer also.?

Wonderful post of the furry family, perfect for Thanksgiving Weekend!
Wonderful post and pictures Diana … quite an undertaking and adventure for you and the people who watched you / escorted you on your quest to provide us with one blog of the entire family of non-humans. TOBIN – I love your penpal communication story. That is TRUE old-school communication – we of many decades appreciate and enjoy such efforts. I’m going to take a “page from your book” when I send letters. Thank you both 🙂
If you take a look in the archives at the blog post for 4-16-2021, I printed out the photographs and text, which I sent to my pen pal as an academic paper:. “Quantitative Issues in Evaluating pan Troglodytes”. If anything, my friend is now aware that, as the text reads, “Do not, under any circumstances, taunt the scale operator.”
TY, Diana, for all of your work–I hope we’re not big pests when it comes to reminding you that we haven’t seen one of our favs in a while! We know you’d tell us if they weren’t ok, we just like seeing them!
Annie’s amazing hair AND lovely hands! And I like how Cy was smiling at you through the sunshine as he was being groomed!
Good to see Neggie leaving her nest so much!
I wonder which would be my favorite spot there…? The portrait studio, where I could watch the trains in the valley below like Neggie? The second floor greenhouse windows, like Jamie and Foxie? The playhouse windows, like Bubba? The base of the stairs or the playhouse door next to the kitchen, like Jamie? I’ll bet Rayne’s platforms give a good view of the hill….Which would be yours?
I love that the chimps have such a variety of things, places to be, and people around them. I used to volunteer at Wildlife Waystation and we were so limited there with contact and interacting with the chimps. I really miss them, but am happy that they now have more to entertain them and keep them busy and happy!! Even if it is a lot of work, you are so lucky!! Kiss all of them for me. (yeah…right!!!)
A huge thankyou, Diana and top marks for creatively snapping away like climbing up tall ladders to capture Missy. I loved seeing sweet Annie with a definite spring in her step. A full house photo shoot of your amazing and ever increasing family.
I love seeing photos of everyone. And Negra up and spying on the neighbors?! Even she is not immune to the allure of drama, it seems.
I have to say, there’s just something about Honey B’s face. She just always looks like she’s up to something. Did Jamie end up poking the camera? 😉
Thank you for wonderful family photo album!! News (& pictures) from those far away are always refreshing to the soul!!
Thank you for walking around and around and around, infinity.
I also loved them all and have a great appreciation for the time of took to provide! Thankful
Thank you for appreciating the photos and our efforts to get them!
Fabulous photos Diana!!! Thank you for everything you do:)
I enjoyed your efforts very much!!!
