A Little Bit of Mischief

August 13, 2023 by Diana

Sometimes a little bit of mischief is a good thing. If you are wondering which human left the contraband in Honey B’s greenhouse, look no further than the author of this blog post.

If you’d like to talk to me in person about this mistake or the many other mistakes I’ve made over the years at the sanctuary, or if you are perhaps looking to get into a little bit of mischief yourself, I invite you to join me at HOOT! in one month! You will learn so much more about the chimpanzees and bovines, and you’ll meet some terrific people, all the while eating great food and celebrating the sanctuary. We want you there! Get your tickets (in person or virtual) today!

Such an exciting find for Honey B until she became frightened by the cover on it. Was it a squeegee? I couldnt see exactly what is was but it seemed to make a fine grooming pole. I was thrilled to see Honey run outside and was hoping she would stay but its a start. Diana, better remember to check and make sure everything is returned to its proper place, lol. See you at the HOOT.

See you at HOOT!, Nancy!! That tool is an extendable scrubber plus squeegee that we use to get to the hard to reach area on the second floor of the greenhouse. We actually do report to another staff that all tools are accounted for before letting the chimps back into an area, but I guess I had imagined seeing this in it’s proper place when I did my report ;). At least it made Honey B happy.

Wow, says Honey B, what a find…whatever it is! Funny Honey B didn’t like the soft cleaning part. You’d think, with Honey B being such a fashion hound, she could accessorize with that! Looked as if Honey was finding a little bit of comfort in the sheet after coming into contact that scary orange squeegee cover.

Next time, Diana, please be sure to leave the hose with squeegee. 🙂

A dash outside?!? It appears Honey B had the zoomies. I would love a breakdown on why she dashed outside. Who was displaying in the chute door? (Please note, I am not going to mention any names as I don’t want to assume/imply guilt of an innocent party.) Was she running from the conflict or running towards someone outside, seeking their reassurance….or both? I hope this incident will not deter Honey B from venturing outside in the future. Please share your interpretation. Inquiring minds want to know.

I believe Honey B went outside to give Terry a piece of her mind. I’m sure he was quite surprised as everyone knows Honey B hadn’t ventured outside and will even go on the Bray to run away from her. I believe it was Mave who was near the end of the chute, and I thought she might even be compelled to go out too, but she refrained. If anything, I would think it would help Honey B learn that it’s okay to go out, since she didn’t touch the fence and was able to accomplish what she wanted, but she hasn’t gone on the Bray again since then. We are talking about giving her an opportunity with just a few friends rather than the whole group to see if that might be more appealing.

Diana, when Honey B went out to give Terry what for, who came to break it up? Was that Cy or Willy B?

I am pretty sure that was Cy who took a flying leap off the structure to run towards Honey B / Terry.

I saw Mave in the chute, Diana, but not Dora. Was that what prompted her to run out? And I couldn’t tell if she was giving Terry reassurance or angry at him.
I thought for a moment that we were going to see “squeegee” on the wish list.
But Honey B returns things (hoses excepted) in better shape than another person we know:

Linda, I think that Dora was in the Chute outside of the view of the security camera. Thanks for linking to that video – it was wild to see that part of the building still under construction, and I had forgotten about that incident.

Well what a pant hoot! I especially loved the bit where Honey B was poking that pole at the caregiver. Who would have thought a squeegie could cause so much mayhem and mischief. Thanks for sharing, Diana.

so what kind of disciplinary action did you dispense, upon yourself Diana? 😉

Actually, here’s a little insight into our system here. We have a spreadsheet of “safety violations” that are either self-reported or reported by an observer. No staff or volunteer is exempt from receiving a safety violation if they do something that is deemed to be worthy of noting on the spreadsheet, and that includes leaving things behind in a chimp enclosure. For this (and most) offenses, the disciplinary measure for staff is public shaming when we go over safety violations in the previous two weeks at our staff meetings ;). It seems to be punitive enough that we don’t have very many violations, and most of them are quite minor. Sometimes they point to a procedure that needs to be fixed and sometimes we decide something is no longer a violation worthy of the spreadsheet. I have accumulated many over my long tenure at the sanctuary, and I don’t think we’ve had any staff who a completely clean record. We all deviate from perfection, it turns out.

Well, let’s chalk it up to “blog community enrichment”:stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I want to echo what Kathleen says above. It seemed to me too that Honey B pulled down the sheet to take a moment to calm herself. Oh my spicy Honey B, I love you so!
