In loving remembrance of Jody

May 14, 2023 by Katelyn

Heartfelt thanks to long-time friend of the sanctuary, Tracy Headley, for also sponsoring this special day in memory and celebration of beautiful, beloved Jody:

“In loving remembrance of Jody. In our hearts today and always.”

We chose to celebrate Jody’s honorary birthday on Mother’s Day in honor of the nine children she gave birth to while in biomedical research. Today would have been Jody’s 48th birthday and today we will celebrate her and all the mothers and their children in her family and sanctuary home, just as we always have. As Tracy lovingly shared, “today and always.”

Happy Birthday and Happy Mother’s Day, Jody. We love you more than words could ever say.

The photo at the very top is my favorite of JoJo. Lilacs are also my mother’s favorite flower, so now I will always associate them with Jody and Mother’s Day.

Thank you, Tracy, for sponsoring this day in honor of your dear friend. I have taken some time today to look in the CSNW archives of photographs of our dear Jody. I love and cherish her always.

What a lovely tribute to a beloved chimpanzee. Jody was a truly special spirit, and the photos and videos captured of her over the years helped us get a real sense of her personality. That she is gone so suddenly is still a shock, but it helps to know that her family remains safe and loved. I know that grief is a spiral, that when you think it’s passed, it might creep back up and tap your on the shoulder, but that over time, the pain eases. My hope is that it eases for everyone at CNSW as we move forward into summertime. Jody will never be far from any of hearts. I will always think of her on Mother’s Day, and send a special prayer to her, wherever she is.

Hello. I wanted to thank you for sharing your video “Saying Goodbye” on Youtube. It was very moving.

I was hoping you would be able to answer a question. In the video, at the 3:42 mark, a chimp lets his (or her) left hand hang loosely and then rapidly shakes it. At 7:52, a chimp points firmly at another chimp and then raises his arm upwards. Do you have any idea what these gestures mean or what communication they are intended to convey?

Thank you again for all your excellent work, and I am sorry for your loss.

Another blog reader here. The informed staff at the sanctuary may be able to say something about what Annie’s gesture meant, but I’ll point out (as I did above) that she’s done that hand waggle before when upset. There’s a video where she’s upset that the dominant female has stolen her BFF’s chow biscuits, and she does it vehemently and repeatedly. I think it’s called “lunch conflict” — it’s a short one. The ‘pointing’ is probably reaching out to Foxie (IIRC) for reassurance. She gets a nod from Foxie.

Hi Robert: Annie’s gestures are a sign that she is anxious and upset and they also serve as a request for reassurance. At one point, Foxie nods toward Annie to offer reassurance and Annie responds with a nod of her own.
