On the sixth day of Christmas
Donor Linda gave to me
New People magazines!
– Cy Chimpanzee, probably
We send our most heartfelt gratitude and warmest wishes to our supporters who have donated to the chimpanzees through the Comfort & Joy online auction! You can go directly to the event’s web page to see the numerous items that were purchased by our community on behalf of the chimpanzees who call the sanctuary home.
You’ve probably seen some of the earliest gifts unveiled on the blog recently, from Squishmallows On the First Day of Christmas to a Negra-themed blanket On the Fifth. Today’s surprise is another unconventional enrichment item, intended to excite one quirky individual in particular. Without further ado, we extend a special thank you to:
Linda M. for donating the subscription to People magazine (addressed to Cy Chimpanzee)
Indeed, the sanctuary’s biggest bookworm will now have a steady supply of celebrity gossip and pop culture trivia to entertain him when he needs a moment of peace apart from his companions. Today, Enrichment Coordinator Chad delivered the latest edition of People directly to Cy’s “mailbox” (a gap under the caging of the Marmot Mountain playroom). You can check out the included video to see how Cy reacted to the holiday surprise!
Linda C says
Wow, he practically flew down to receive that!
Jamie could give him some page-turning pointers, I think.
Looks like whoever Willy B is grooming got the worst of that fight.
The video is over when the Gaze of Honey B begins!

Cy doesn’t joke around when magazines are on the enrichment schedule (which is just about every day). He’s all business about them when they’re brand new like that.
Willy was grooming Terry, which is good because we observed some tension between them last week. And indeed, Honey B doesn’t respect my personal space. 🙂
Maureen says
Brilliant gift!
Anthony says
We agree!
Chris says
Wow Chad! what a great head of hair. I have often wondered what the staff looks like. You should show your faces more often.
Anthony says
Chris, Chad and the other caregivers got a kick out of your compliment! He does have fantastic hair. You should have seen him in his Troy Polamalu phase.
We would like to show more of what the humans do around the sanctuary, but it can be challenging because we’re all so busy and those shots don’t usually come organically. It’s definitely something we want to explore further in the near future, though. 🙂
Linda C says
We HAVE seen “Troy” in that phase, lol!
For others, I d suggest Christmas 2015 or 2016 (the year Jamie found the snake in the book). Diana, Anna, and someone else taking out the food
Marcie says
The Californians Cy and his sister Rayne have to keep up with the Hollywood buzz. It’s great to have a friend like Linda to help keep them informed. Thanks Linda it’s the prefect gift for Cy.
Anthony says
We agree and are so grateful, Marcie! Thanks for your support too.
Kathleen says
1:31 into the video, Cy and Rayne sitting side by side, little white scars on the right side of their foreheads in almost the exact same place, white beards, flipping pages with their lips! They look like twins, not half siblings. So funny and totally priceless!
People magazine should do an article on Cy and his passion for their publication. Send them this post!
I noticed the pages of the magazine are all loose. I am guessing you remove the stapled binding before you give it to Cy? Clearly Cy is not one tear up his reading material. 🙂
Linda C says
Actually, I think we saw Chad hand it over in one piece. I think it’s because he’s not as delicate turning the pages as Jamie is. I think Rayne’s expression says “what is this? there’s no peanut butter here.”
I think People magazine should know this, too!
Anthony says
Sometimes we see Lucky, Honey B, Rayne and Cy do things that look uncannily similar. Perhaps being inquisitive is one of their inherited traits!
Also, yes, we remove all staples, fragrance samples, glue, etc. The magazines normally hold their form until the chimps get a hold of them. And yes, Linda C- it’s entirely possible that Rayne was looking for peanut butter while perusing the pages!
Elaine Reininger says
Don’t you wonder what they are seeing and comprehending. Jamie never held a photo, book or page upside down so they must know what it is. Linda must be so delighted to see how well received her gift was. I like seeing what the staff looks like, too.
Anthony says
I have those same questions every time I see Cy skimming through a magazine or Jamie flipping the pages in a book. It’s impossible to know, but I think Cy seems intrigued by all the varieties of human features and fashion, wildlife and landscapes, etc. I imagine he has the same desire to learn about them as we do, but that’s just a guess based on gut feeling and what little we know about how chimpanzees perceive their world.
