Sanctuary Actually

October 25, 2022 by Chad de Bree

There are many different stories that unfold throughout the day in the lives of the chimpanzees. Though caregivers aren’t always around to get footage of each and every story, they happen regardless. One thing that intertwines all these stories together is life in sanctuary.

Some bonus photos:

Negra eating a breakfast pomegranate.

Mave and Dora holding hands.

Burrito making his way up Young’s Hill on the first day after the renovations.

Some photos of Burrito with the rose bush!

Today’s video has an European Art Film vibe to it. I can think of no reason why this couldn’t be entered as a short film at a film festival.

Just slap a French title to the video — Sanctuaire, Actuellement — and it’s sure to earn a screeninv.

Hilarious and sweet! Has anyone told Burrito he has heart problems?!? I love his funny little legs and his ever present playfulness. The girls enjoying each other’s company is so good to watch. And why did Farmer Jo want to bring half of Young’s Hill inside? But the others were intelligent enough to work out how to bypass her indoor garden without making an issue of it. I thought Jamie was going to say a few choice words when she got past. The sand was interesting…..just like human babies, first, see if it’s good to eat! Thanks Chad for brightening my day as always.

OMG Chad.. That was so much fun to watch. I kept wondering if anyone would pull the bush inside after they passed over it. Did Bubba do that? And I love the boma he made for himself. I could almost feel the sand sliding through my own fingers.. and the back foot test that Lucky did was priceless. It’s all priceless… I agree with Tobin – what a great short to submit to a film festival. Tres bien!!! Thanks to all of you, as always- you do make our day/s out here 🙂

Aw, Chad, he loves you so much! I’m sure some days, you must thank your lucky stars that Missy doesn’t need your company the way Bubba does! Could you imagine that!?
Same, I expected Jamie to get it out of the way. Please tell me the bush was already dead, that they didn’t kill it to harvest any leftover hips! Last week I strained my back–Annie getting through that doorway was like me trying to climb into bed last week!
And Lucky with the sand between her toes. wonderful!

Chad! That was amazing. I totally agree with Tobin. Your little video is art film competition worthy.

I was mesmerized by Burrito and the “movement” of the fencing, and the sound. (It also dawned on me that now, with the new enclosure, you have more uphill running and an extra locking door for you to maneuver through! :fearful:).

Mave and Dora, too sweet. And the rosebush caper was over the top! And Jody just sat there! At one point I could hear Jamie thinking “…enough of this Farmer Jo persona, let’s move this prickly shrub outta here!”

The sand was pure Zen. I’m guessing this was the first time the ladies experienced sand?

Bravo! And the Golden Sanctuary Globe goes to Chad and friends.

The compound looks fantastic, great job everyone. i love that they get to climb trees for the first time in their lives.
May I ask where you moved the memory stones, I don’t see them along the walk with the chimps.

What an entertaining video, I’m not sure which Act I preferred, I think it has to be Jody and the thorn bush. She just sat there watching the others do contortions to try and get by…hilarious!! Thanks, Chad…I really enjoyed it.

Did you speed up Act 1 to 2.0 or at least 1.5? Seemed high speed to me.

    LOVED it all!
    Ditto ALL the above comments!

The bush episode was hilarious. I laughed out loud when I saw the clever gymnastics they went through to get over it.

Love this video. Thank you Chad. Thank you to all of you who make it possible for the Chimps to spend their days and nights doing what they choose to do.
