I am most relieved to see that the Boss receives correspondence that is sent to the Sanctuary and, thus, for her purview. At the 0:34 mark, I see Jamie giving a perfunctory speed-read to my staggering words of epistlatory genius — I would recognize my illegible handwriting anywhere! I trust that sorting through today’s backlog of hard copies did not impede upon Jamie’s receipt of — and responses to — the e-mail addressed to her.

Tobin! As I was filming, I was wondering if you would spot your letter :). Now you have at least three official fans of your letters.

Tobin, I’m so glad she was perusing your letter! I adored seeing her lick the glue of some of the envelopes. What a great idea for a video for our “enrichment” out here in blogland! Thank you, Diana!

Ph, seeing her lick the envelope is too much!
I’m sad to see the hair disappearing on her belly again…?
Bubba sure was having a good time! What a delightful background noise!
Thanks, Diana. Happy Sunday!

Jamie’s hair-plucking is definitely on the rise, though half of the hair loss on her belly is from being shaved for her fistula proceedure last month. Good ear! Burrito and Foxie were playing in the background.

oh, silly, me to have forgotten that! Thanks, Diana, for getting back to me

Is the hair pulling stress related?
Diana Goodrichsays
Laurie, that’s a question we ask all the time. So far, we haven’t been able to answer it definitively. It doesn’t appear that Jamie plucks her hair when she is actively stressed, and she will do it when there are plenty of other activities to chose from, so it doesn’t seem to be out of boredom either. These types of behaviors that chimps have done for years (even years prior to coming to the sanctuary) are really difficult to pinpoint a cause. A possible analogy is a human who bites their nails – it’s possible that the behavior started because of some stressful event, but it continues out of habit in many different contexts.

It’s facinating to watch her lick the envelopes. How does she know to do that? Such amazing souls. xoxo

The same way she knows how to tie knots and file her nails….raised among humans + an extra smart Jamie = some pretty amazing things! ?

If you’ve never seen some of the older videos of Jamie using a pencil and other tools to make very interesting abstract drawings on paper with great concentration it’s quite an amazing process to watch. She’s very intentional about her strokes and the design. Yep, part of her being raised by humans most likely, but now in sanctuary and doing it on her own just blew me away the first time I watched her. I have a screen shot for my phone so I can look at it whenever I want. Amazing. It makes my heart jump out of my chest! What a woman!

One of the videos is called…Jaymie chimpanzee drawing. I had to go back and watch it again! Can’t believe it was ten years ago.

My apologies Jamie for misspelling your name!

Next time I think you could just give Jamie envelopes and post-it pads to lick! Jamie is amazing. I liked her slow steady perusal through the pile and the way she was so delicate with each piece.

In addition to Jamie sorting and reading the mail, does she perform any other office chores? I have some shredding I would love for her to do for me. I’d be willing to bring several boxes over to her and I would pay the minimum wage!

Absolutely fascinating. This video blew me away. So human. I wondered how she knew there was something tasty on the edge of the envelope flap.

Fantastic, innovative, form of enrichment for Jamie! Congratulations on your creativity! Very entertaining to watch her sift through the mail! Are the, other, chimps in her group having the, same, opp;ortunity? She seems to like licking the glue. Seems, very, similar to Cy’s enjoyment of his magazines.

oooo-oooo-oooo….what about scented paper??? They would probably just eat the paper!!!! lol!

I thought about sending those perfume inserts that come with magazines, but wasn’t sure if they would be safe for them, for this reason
